Tonight the Patchogue Sketch Club met at Meadowcroft Estate in Sayville at 6:30. With the sun setting earlier and earlier we have to work fast before it gets too dark.
First I painted in the garden. I liked the contrast of the stone birdbath and the flowers.
This is about 4 x 6 in my Stillman & Birn Alpha Sketchbook.
The other artists were still working so I went over by the vegetable garden and did a quick watercolor sketch just with paint. I really abused the paper in this one with a lot of water and paint...but the paper took it well...no pilling, no buckling.
You're right, Joan - dusk is creeping up on us earlier and earlier as we paint, and I just want to shake my fist at the sky and say, "Hey! Didn't summer just start? Don't go so soon!" Then again, capturing that fleeting light is half the challenge. Lovely paintings!
ReplyDeleteAs you say, useful contrast with the birdbath, you just cant pass over opportunities like that! lovely diffused passages in the veg garden, this has a nice fresh feel, probably because of your quick, unlaboured approach. What weight is the paper in your sketch book? I don't know of Stillman & Birn.
ReplyDeleteSo nice and fresh, both pieces! Reminds me of spring more than the end of summer and I do like the spring months!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kerry! It is hard when Mother Nature keeps changing the sunset time. lol
ReplyDeleteKievin - Thanks. I was slopping on the paint for the veggies more like I was using oils.
Sherry - Thank you. But with spring you can think about longer days coming.
LOVE the birdbath, Joan!....Beautifully painted...
ReplyDeleteI've just bought myself a stillman and birn but it's not been used yet - love these two sketches, very summery!
ReplyDeleteKeep catching the last light of summer. These paintings are two lovely memories of this year's summer.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Hilda, Sharon, and Polly!
