A friend told me on Wednesday morning that it was National Lighthouse Day, and her husband wanted to know if I was going to paint a lighthouse. I didn't know about National Lighthouse Day but I did have this urge to paint one when I got up in the morning. So even though the weather wasn't too nice I headed over to Robert Moses State Park, home of the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Since Hurricane Sandy last year the beach in front of the lighthouse is undergoing restoration and I was glad to see they have been piling up large amounts of sand to form dunes for protection. A lot of the foliage is gone but it is still a lovely spot to paint. I sat along the sand road that goes from the parking lot to the lighthouse (there used to be a boardwalk that was lost in the storm) and spoke to many of the people who passed by on their way to visit it. It is a spot I'm sure I will return to many more times.
Wow! This is most excellent Joan!
ReplyDeleteSpectacular, Joan! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteI have thing about lighthouses, so I love this painting of yours
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous lighthouse! Ever since I saw Pete's Dragon on video when my kids were little, I've had a yen to live in one. Silly really since at my age and weight, the knees wouldn't allow for easy up and down. Nevertheless, the yen remains. I love this one's color and markings. Very arresting! Sad to hear of the damage from Sandy, but I am so encouraged by the rebuilding that has been going on.
ReplyDeleteThanks, David!
ReplyDeleteTina - Too bad I didn't get to post it on National Lighthouse Day itself.
Polly - I love lighthouses too. I've painted most of them that I've gone to.
Sherry - I saw that too. There are some that allow you to stay in them overnight...but you still have all the stairs. Thanks so much!
This is definitely a favorite, Joan. You painted the lighthouse beautifully!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou have captured this scene beautifully Joan, love how you have handled all the foliage
ReplyDeleteI was one of those people that stopped by to chat about Nat'l Lighthouse Day, although it says "Linda", that's not my name or gender..haha. My great-grandfather was a lighthouse keeper so I have an affection for lighthouse artwork. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteThanks Hilda, Lorraine, and "Linda."
ReplyDeleteWhich lighthouse did your great-grandfather work as a keeper?
