Maritime Museum Marsh Views

Last Wednesday the Patchogue Sketch Club met in the early evening at the Maritime Museum in Sayville. Although the museum was closed by the time we met, the grounds stay open. I did this across a 2 page spread in my book for the Sketchbook Project.

Then the sun was starting to set, so I pulled out an ATC (2.5 x 3.5) to paint a bit of that. It is hard to do plein air sunsets. Once the paper gets wet there isn't enough time to let it dry so that each layer still stays it's true color. I'm hoping that doing smaller paintings helps. lol

Sunflower Field

My plein air group went to a sunflower field last week. I found that if I worked standing up at an easel instead of sitting down like I usually do, I got a better view. This is 8 x 10.

Field of Flowers

My friend Susan and I went out to East Marion to paint recently. The owners of Shep's farm let us go out and sit near their fields to paint. This is 8 x 10.

Lobster for Sale

Maine really has such interesting subjects. On my way home I stopped in Cape Porpoise which is near Kennebunkport, Maine. This is the scene I found. This is 8 x 10.

Pemaquid Lighthouse

I think Pemaquid Lighthouse is my favorite lighthouse. I have some emotional attachment to that place. It is about 20 minutes from my sister's house, so I make a point of getting there every time I visit Tina. Usually I paint it as a vertical composition so I get more of the dramatic rocks in front of the lighthouse, but I decided to do a different view this time. This is about 4 x 10.

Waiting on Front Street

We had rain one of the days I was in Maine, so my sister and I went south to an art museum. Then we rode around looking for some place we could sketch from the car. We weren't inspired and she needed to stop for milk before we headed home. We stopped at a market in the historic section of Bath that had a row of stores across the street. The view wasn't great from the car, but when she went into the market she found out that they had an area with tables and a view out the window. So we got some coffee and sketched from there. At first I was going to paint this colorful orange store which was next to this one, but then I saw these two men obviously waiting for their wives under the overhang. When I finished, one of the woman came back and I was wishing I had done her too because she was in a bright yellow slicker!

Maine Water Views

The good thing about painting in Maine is there are so many good views of the water.
This was done while sitting on Pemaquid Beach.

We took a ride over to Ocean Point near Boothbay Harbor. This is a great spot for rocks and water. Of course I didn't follow my gut and do the little red and white boat first. The owners came and took it while I was painting it! I told them they weren't allowed to remove the model but they just took it.

Sketches from Maine

Here are two more sketches I did directly in ink on my am walks in Maine.

This is Glidden Street which has lovely houses and is along the Damariscotta River. It is actually in Newcastle because you cross the bridge to get there. I sat on a rock wall in front of someone's house to sketch this.

Kayaks have been among my favorite subjects this summer. There is just something about the colors that make them stand out. This display of kayaks was just by the bridge by the Damariscotta River.

Trip to Maine

This page of sketches continues my trip on the ferry. The models don't always stay put.
The painting below was done on one of my early morning walks. I headed out with a postcard sized block and my pen in my fanny pack. This was done directly in pen for my 75 day challenge. I added the color when I got back from my walk.

Waiting for the Ferry

I took the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point, NY to New London, CT on Friday to start my trip to Maine. I knew I had some time to sketch while we were lined up before boarding.

This is one of my sketches for the 75 Day Challenge directly in pen.
Have some wine with me.

Fire Island Lighthouse View

One of my favorite spots to paint is at Robert Moses State Park with a view of the Fire Island Lighthouse. I sat up on the bird viewing platform to paint this. It is 5 x 7.

Patchogue Shores

The other night the Patchogue Sketch Club met at Patchogue Shores down by the bay. My friend, Roseanne, let us into her development's private beach.

First I did a small painting of the shrubs and foliage.
But I kept checking behind me where the clouds were really making the sky look special. So when I finished the first painting I turned around to paint the sky. At first it was very muted.
Then it got a bit more color. Unfortunately watercolors are not the best medium to use for sunsets on a damp night, because the paper doesn't dry and you can't get really dark colors. And it bleeds! lol I did my best at the time.
Finally I gave up and watched my friends who were working in pastel and oil paints. They were much more successful at capturing the color. Here are a few of them.
First is Chris DeMauro.
Next is Gina Lento.
Of course the sky just kept getting better.
And better!

Madoo Garden

On Saturday friends and I went to Madoo which is a garden that is part of the Nature Conservancy. It was a beautiful spot to sit and paint. I did this in watercolors and it is 5 x 7.

Then I did a sketch in ink and watercolors of one of the garden gates.

Watercraft

On Wednesday my sketching group met at the West Sayville Boat Basin. I focused on the canoe and kyaks that were stored there.

Friday, August 3, 2012

On Tuesday my plein air group met at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. This is the garden in front of the manor house. It isn't quite this yellow. I couldn't get the color adjusted right.

Sketching Dinner

I don't think most people sketch and paint their food before eating it, but I couldn't resist doing this. He was so cooperative!
