Judy Morris Workshop - Day 4

Once again we headed out for a sunrise walk and photo op here in Myrtle Beach. Here are a few photos. I'm probably coming home with about 300 sunrise pictures. lol

It was a bit colder this morning! I needed my hood up and probably would have been happier if I had worn my coat instead of just my light fleece jacket.

We did a lot of work in Judy Morris' Workshop today but learned a lot too. Judy had a CD of the medal winners of the American Watercolor Society's show which we watched and we discussed the paintings strong points and for a few their weak points. It is good to have a person who juries shows speak about the work and how things get selected.

In the morning she also did several demos on fixing things in paintings and how to examine our paintings before declaring them totally finished. She has a lot of good ideas.

Here is a photo of my sister Mickey working on one of her paintings. I forgot to get her to take one of me working...maybe tomorrow if I remember.

I continued working on both pieces from yesterday. You can see I added more color to the saris and some more color and depth to the trees, as well as adding some tree trunks and branches.

I added brickwork and color to some of the buildings. You can see that there are some dark spots on the building on the center right. I tried to add some stencil work to the shutters on the left but ended up getting some spots in the sky. I had to add another top of a building to cover it up.

After lunch we had a "Where do I go from here?" session where we brought up our paintings for suggestions on what they needed and how we should finish them. Judy was able to do about half of the paintings and will continue tomorrow. It is interesting to listen to her suggestions on how to improve a painting even if it isn't your own.

For my painting of the woman everyone loved the colors and the way it looked. Her only suggestion was to add some orange into the blossoms to tie the painting together.

For the Venice painting she suggested darkening the colors of the buildings inside the archway and making the windows and doorways about the color of the window on the top left. So after dinner we went back and worked on our paintings and then spent some time gabbing with the other artists and sharing sketchbooks.

Tomorrow is another day!
