I like finding marine related buildings like this one in Islip. It is fun to sketch the vehicles and details. 

Snow Piles and Boats

The boats at the marinas are mostly wrapped for the winter, but I did find this one in the lot by the Tiki Bar in Patchogue that was uncovered. I liked this scene with the melting snow piles and assorted marine materials around. I sketched from my mobile studio so the cold outside didn't phase me. I believe this is the Sunset Harbor Marina.

Leslie K

During the winter most of the boats here are in dry-dock and covered, but I found a few boats along Brown's River that were still uncovered. Leslie K was uncovered but out of the water in Sayville. 

Off Season at Silly Lilly

 I was out in the Moriches area and stopped by the Silly Lilly Fishing Station. It was mostly closed up for the season with the larger boats shrink wrapped. There were a few smaller boats that were out of the water. Even the parking area was closed off with a chain and a "no parking" sign was visible. It was still a fun location for sketching.

Boat Repairs

 My PALS Plein Air group met at the Long Island Maritime Museum last week. The grounds are what always interest me, but this time I didn't work on the water views. There are several buildings on the property that are used for boat building and renovations. This particular building caught my interest because of the light on the boat inside coming through the open doorway. I believe the boat inside is the Priscilla, an old oyster sloop that is being renovated. The mast on the Pricilla had been removed and slices of it have been decorated by artist for the next fundraiser that the Maritime Museum is having. I painted one of the pieces for the next fundraiser.

Silly Lily Revisited

 Recently I went over to Silly Lily in East Moriches. I've been there many times so I'm always looking for a new view to sketch, like this one.

Weeks Yacht Yard

 I've sketched versions of this view of Weeks Yacht Yard in Patchogue so often. It always calls me when I am nearby. This is 4 x 6 for the postcard project.

Islip Buoys

 Riding around in Islip I found this house with a lot of lobster buoys along one of the canals. It reminded me of the houses in Maine. They were prepared with a few boats too.

Silly Lily Colors

 My plein air group went down to the Silly Lily Fishing Station in Center Moriches last week. Between the yellow building and the colorful boat I was in heaven.

The Boat Yard

If you follow me here you probably know that one of my "go to" places is Weeks Yacht Yard in Patchogue. It doesn't matter the season. There is always something going on. A lot of the boats have been shrink wrapped for the winter but a few of them, like this one are uncovered. An all around the boats there is "stuff" to draw...perfect for me.

Inktober 2022 - Day 11 Weeks Boat Yard & Lighthouse Painting

 A good sketching friend, Mel Barranco, often uses ballpoint pen when he sketches (especially people on his commute each morning), and I love what he does. My friend, Tina Koyama has been doing portrait sketching...often with ballpoint pen. After doing an entire sketch with ballpoint pen my hat is off to both of them. It is not easy! Filling in a solid color takes a lot of time. Using my Lamy is much easier. I don't think ballpoint pen will be my medium of choice.

This was done at one of my favorite sketching spots, Weeks Boat Yard. It may look familiar if you have followed my blog for any amount of time. There are great buildings and lots of boats that seem to move around regularly.

I have been able to get over to Robert Moses Beach on a few different nice, nearly summery days. 

I can sit and see the Fire Island Lighthouse from almost anywhere there.

Silly Lily Paintings

On Saturday a friend of mine wanted to go out painting. She has her own business creating custom draperies, etc. and is always super busy lately so we haven't painted together in months. With another friend we decided to head over to the Silly Lily Fishing Station in East Moriches. I always enjoy painting there and the building really brightens up the day. There were a lot of people who came out to rent boats and we laughed because some of them were dressed more for cocktails on a deck than climbing into a rowboat or small motor boat. For some reason I don't think a silk shirt constitutes boating attire. lol

It was such a beautiful day that I did another painting, this time of one of their boats...yellow of course.

 

Boatyard

 It seems like I can find some kind of boat every time I turn around. These were at the Silly Lily Fishing Station in East Moriches.

Sea Ready

 Here is another direct watercolor for the 30 x 30 Challenge that I did before my surgery. I like boats that are tied up along the bulkheads in Patchogue.

Week's Boats & On Exhibit

 Week's Boatyard is one of those places that I tend to go when I can't decide where to sketch. The last time I was there it was so crowded with boats in dry dock for the winter that you could barely drive in. I didn't get far onto the property when I spotted this boat that became my COI. Of course there were layers of boats behind it too.

Grand Central Terminal Expo is UP.

Come one! Come All! Come to see The work of the NYC Urban Sketchers mounted in an explosion in Grand Central Terminal. The pictures are exhibited on the temporary walls constructed in the main hall and some hallways. The exhibit will be up until the walls come down in the late spring/early summer. (by Raylie Dunkel)

While GCT is doing some construction the NYC Urban Sketchers were invited to submit samples of their sketches for an exhibition on the temporary walls. Each sketcher was allowed to submit up to 3 sketches for consideration.I know that this one of my sketches was accepted and is hanging there. I'm not sure about the others. This is the sketch that a fellow sketcher snapped a photo of when she was there today.

Boats on the Canal

 I found a place to pull in across the canal from Weeks Boat Yard.  Over on their side there were so many boats in drydock that it was too crowded. This side was better. I was surprised that there were still so many boats in the water at this time of year. Usually almost everything is out by now.

Sayville Dock

Along the Sayville Dock there are always some interesting boats and buildings. It is a fun area to sketch and I return there a lot.

 

Inktober Day 10 - Boat Repairs

 Down near the Sayville Dock there are a few places that repair and recondition boats...and some of them are large boats like this one which is a charter fishing boat. This was done from my mobile studio for my Inktober 2020 Day 10 sketch.

Kayaks at the Boat Yard

I don't know how I got so organized yesterday morning that I was able to paint the plums and then have time to go out and sketch something too. Maybe it had something to do with being up before 6 AM. lol I didn't have a lot of sketching time which meant I had to go someplace that was a sure thing. I haven't been to Week's Boatyard in Patchogue in a long time, but it is one of my favorite places to paint. It has several ramshackle buildings and lots of boats. They don't mind if artists sit and paint. In fact they often come over and talk to me when I'm there. This time I didn't even get out of the car. I saw the colorful kayaks by the small red building, backed my car up for a good view, and I was set.

Under Wraps at Weeks Boatyard

Yesterday I drove over to Weeks Boatyard in Patchogue. As I pulled in I noticed this view with all the boats under wraps. Usually at this time of year most of the boats are shrink-wrapped and everything looks the same. I liked that these are covered with different colored tarps and the colors of the boats are still showing.
