East Islip Marina

This was also painted on Sunday, which was a grey overcast day. It was done in my journal for the Sketchbook Project across 2 pages.

Local Produce

We have been having some really damp, gloomy days which have not been very inspiring to paint en plein air. I did get out yesterday to paint a local farmstand from the car. It was drizzling while I painted.

Plants By the Shed

On Tuesday my plein air group met at alocation in East Patchogue that grows roses. Although we weren't allowed in the greenhouses, we were allowed to paint in the front garden. I had to make sure to get the bicycle done quickly because the woman who owned it was planning on leaving by 11:30. l

Portrait of Andy (Commission)

This is a portrait I did as a commission. I worked from 2 of Andy's graduation photos...one with the mortarboard and one without. The request was for the photo with the mortarboard, because that photo was a better pose, but they wanted it without the hat, so I used the hairline from the second photo. I think it came out pretty well, and Andy's grandfather was very happy with it.

Walled Garden

I did this painting of an area of the walled garden at Old Westbury Gardens the same day as I did the one below. This is 5 x 7.

Thatched Cottage Garden

Yesterday I went to Old Westbury Gardens to paint and sketch. There are some wonderful gardens there, but I had to find a place to sit that wasn't in direct sun. Luckily there was some shade by the Thatched Cottage. The garden there is great. This is 5 x 7.

Now where is that bottle of Corona Light?
This is about 2 x 5.

Flowers in the Can

Yesterday was a cool, overcast day on Long Island. I headed over to my friend, Susan's house. She has such a wonderful garden with interesting views and corners, and some very different planters filled with flowers. I just love this old, peeling watering can that she filled with flowers.
This is about 5 x 5.

I don't know what I will paint today since it is pouring here. I'll have to look for an indoor view.

Worldwide Sketchcrawl #36

Saturday was the Worldwide Sketchcrawl and I did it solo again.
I headed over to the farmer's market that takes place in Sayville every Saturday. It isn't big but the booths were pretty colorful.
The first booth sold local veggies and cheese...very yummy!

Across the aisle from me was a vendor selling bread. I made sure not to go too close to that one. lol

Next I found a vendor who was selling veggies and flowers. Of course I had to sketch the sunflowers (done directly in ink first for my challenge) as well as the other bouquets.

By that point I was much too hot, so I headed home and to the pool in our development. I did sketch a few of the kids on the pool steps.

Sachem Library Garden

Our local library has a lovely large garden where they do concerts in the summer. I noticed the flowers near the entrance the other day and had to sketch them.

Foundry Inn and Spa

Well, I couldn't do a trip and not sketch a bit of the Foundry Inn and Spa where we stayed in Athens, Ga. This was a bit of the entrance and the building that contained the ballroom and other function rooms on the property. It was a nice place definitely in the southern style. I braved the heat again and sat in a bit of shade outside our room.

Here are a few photos of the happy couple, Emily and John.

Gardens in Athens

My stister, Mickey, and I ventured out in the heat in Athens, GA to paint in the garden area of the welcome center across the street from our hotel. It started out overcast and was bearable, but when the sun came out it was much too hot.

Downtown Athens, Georgia

This past weekend we went down to Athens, GA for my nephew's wedding. Of course I took my sketchbooks. It was hot, but I took my small book out with me when I walked there at 7 before it got too hot. This is a view up College Avenue from right in front of the college.

The second day I sketched the Georgia Theater on Clayton and Lumpkin Streets.

I did the sketches directly in pen for my 75 day challenge and added the color in the comfort of my air conditioned room back at the hotel.

Small Sketches Part II

Here are a few more of my sketches done directly in ink. It is getting a little easier now.

This is an ice cream shop in Bellport.

And my hanging flowers on my patio.

This was from a photo taken in Charleston, SC.

This was from a photo taken in North Carolina.

This is the Montauk Lighthouse done from a photo I took.
