Footwear

Jerry was settled for the night on Wednesday and told me and my sister-in-law to go home. For my mental sanity I met a sketching friend for a quick slice of pizza after my full day at the hospital. Then we joined the sketch group that meets on Wednesday night at the library. I didn't stay the entire time but it was good to get out and see people who weren't wearing scrubs. The theme for the night was footwear. I had brought along a pair of my duck boots just in case I was able to go. This will join my collection of art postcards for the troops.

Hospital Mask

After hanging out at the hospital for as long as I have, I just had to do a sketch on a fluid resist face mask. It seemed appropriate since I've been sitting in or around the ICU for the last few days. Jerry is still in the hospital and fighting lots of problems among which was the flu so we were required to wear these in his room.

In the Sun

Another art postcard done for the troops. This was based on a larger sketch I had done in Philadelphia.

Flower Collection

My sister and her husband sent flowers to Jerry at the rehab facility. Then the next day he was back at  the hospital so I took the flowers home. The enclosed card said they were to make Jerry feel better and for me to sketch...so I did. This will also be part of the art postcard project for the troops.

Waiting Room

This was sketched in the hospital waiting room the other day. I was there and figured I might as well use my time wisely.

Morning Sun

This was also done from a photo taken in Australia, near Margaret River, a wine producing area. It is another art postcard for the project.

Emu

This sketch was done from one of my photos that I took when I was in Australia. I love the emus. They are such quirky looking animals with so much character. This will also be heading to the troops. I like it so much I may do a few more...and maybe a larger one too.

Quick update, Jerry is back in the hospital...pneumonia. It was a long, stressful day.

Venetian Window #2

I used another of my photos from Venice to do this art postcard for the project my friend is doing. I love the variety of window in Venice, don't you?

Flower Planter

This was also done from a photo of mine taken in Amsterdam. This is for the art postcard project.

Bike with Flowers

It is fun to look through my photos for something for inspiration for another art postcard. The cards are being collected by my friend, Mary Jo Ernst for the troops overseas. This was inspired by a similar sketch I did in Amsterdam last year.

Venetian Stripes

Working at Jerry's bedside is a challenge because he likes the lights dimmed and I'm not sure of what the colors look like IRL. This was done mostly from a photo taken in Venice on our last trip.

Jerry is now in a rehab facility. They assessed him this afternoon and they will start working with him tomorrow. Thanks for all your supportive words!

Sunset Watch

This was done from a reference photo I took by the bay behind the Fire Island Lighthouse. Again, this is for the art postcard project going to the troops.

Just a quick update. We are looking for rehab facilities for Jerry. Lots of strengthening and learning to do.

Morning Mist

Another 4 x 6 art postcard for the troops. This was done from a reference photo taken on my morning walk when I was in Maine recently.

Sunset 1

Another painting done for the art postcard project for the troops. I used one of my reference photos for this.

Thanks so much for asking about Jerry and sending prayers. A bit of progress today.

Landscape 2 & Under Terry's Afghan

Here is another landscape for the art postcard project that I am doing for the troops. This was done from a photo reference.

I did a quick, digital sketch today of Jerry while he was sleeping under an afghan sent to him by his cousin, Terry. He has been snuggled under it every day since he got it.

Venetian Window

Thanks to all of you for your support and prayers. Today's surgery went well, but he has a long, long, long road ahead of him to get rehabilitated and not a very positive attitude.

I didn't sketch at the hospital today but thought a touch of Venice might make me feel better, so I did this from one of my photos from our trip to Venice in April. This will be part of the art postcard collection going to the troops.

Landscape 1

Jerry has made a bit of progress and is having more surgery tomorrow. Please keep him in your prayers.

This was done for the art postcard project that I am doing. I painted this in the hospital cafe using a photo of a previous painting for the inspiration and then letting my imagination help me finish it.

Tree View

My friend, Mary Jo Ernst, is once again doing a postcard project. She is collecting art postcards to send to the troops overseas. She is trying to collect 200 postcards in support of the US forces abroad and domestic. The cards will be mailed around Feb 14. I participated last year and figure since I am sitting bedside with Jerry these days, I can sketch/paint a few to send to her for the project. I sketched this from the hospital cafe today and added color when I got home tonight. This was done with my ink pen, an elegant writer pen and watercolors.

Odd View at the Hospital

I went down to the cafe at the hospital this afternoon and imagine my surprise to see lots of members of a large motorcycle gang in the lobby. I was itching to sketch them but hesitated. I could see them through the window, but decided to sit facing the other way. Then one of them came in to order something. I sketched him quickly while he waited for his food at the counter.

Meanwhile before he had come in I was sketching my somewhat healthy lunch...a salad, turkey burger and coffee.

Apple View

Since I didn't get a sketch done at the hospital today and I am home early enough this evening I grabbed an old, not so fresh, apple out of the fridge for a quick direct watercolor. It is fun to look at all the colors in that skin.
Jerry had a slightly better day, but has a very long way to go.

Cafe Patron

After lunch at the hospital I did this quick sketch of a woman at the next table. Done with my elegant writer pen.

Bedside Sketch

I know my husband tolerates my sketching everywhere, but out of respect to him I am not including his face in my sketch of him in the Surgical ICU today. I thought it was very cooperative of the tray table to block his head.
No real changes health wise today...lots wrong and things go up and down.

Cafe View

I would much rather have a scenic cafe view from some exciting place but the hospital will be my home for a while. Sketched after having a bit of lunch/dinner.

My husband had surgery today and it went well. He will need surgery again next week to remove the rest of his lower leg. Things are not great, but he is still here, thank God. I appreciate all your concern. Yesterday was a very long day and sketching helped me feel a bit better for a few minutes.

Ceramic Cruet

I didn't get to do a sketch at the hospital today. I got home early enough to relax on the couch a bit before bed. I grabbed my balsamic vinegar cruet to paint directly in watercolors.

My husband is still very ill. He is having surgery again tomorrow. He has a long road and another surgery ahead of him in addition to other problems that need to be addressed.
I would appreciate it if you keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Trying to Keep It Together

Sketching and my sister-in-law and supportive friends are what helped me keep things together today. My thanks for the comments. Jerry is gravely ill. During the time I couldn't be in the recovery room with him tonight I sat in the waiting room with my iPad. There wasn't much too sketch and sketching in the recovery room seemed too invasive to the patients and their families. This worked and took my concentration off things for a bit. Done with Art Rage.

Hospital Sketch

Things have been a bit crazy for me. My hubby was rushed to the hospital yesterday and is having major health problems. He is scheduled for surgery tomorrow, so I am maybe I will have some time to sketch while waiting for the surgery to be over. This was sketched yesterday after he was stabilized...just the view looking out from his ER bed. I couldn't just sit there. I thought I would have time for a sketch today, but I didn't want to sketch him and there was pretty much the same view as this since he was still in the ER (no beds in ICU).

Art Rage Sketches

I am participating in the WetCanvas scavenger hunt being hosted by Jo Castillo. There are a lot of fun things to sketch and you can use any media. I haven't done a digital sketch in a long time, so I gave my very basic digital program, Art Rage, some use for three of my sketches.

Reeds and Sky

I always find the reeds down by the water (phragmites) at the bay and the wetlands here so interesting, and then there are usually great skies above them. This is a direct watercolor done down by the Great South Bay in Sayville.

Bay and Sky View

On New Year's Day I went down by the Great South Bay in Sayville to do my first painting of 2010. I always love when the rays of the sun come out of the clouds. I think about it as "the hands of God."
