Boat Rental

My plein air group, PALS made it's annual visit to Silly Lily's Fishing Station recently. I liked the fun boat rental shack, although it wasn't open.

East Moriches Sunflower Field

My plein air group, PALS, visits this wonderful sunflower field in East Moriches every year. The owner of the field has his workers come and plant sunflowers every year for the community to enjoy. He has the field fenced in so the deer don't get inside and last year started leaving buckets with sunflower bouquets for the public to take for free. I guess that keeps the public from wandering in and cutting the flowers at random. Each year I try to find a different perspective to use for my painting.

Silly Lily Revisited

Recently I went over to Silly Lily in East Moriches. I've been there many times so I'm always looking for a new view to sketch, like this one.

Around Locally

I've been sketching a bit around locally. This is the back deck of a restaurant in Patchogue that is right on the canal called Harbor Crab.

I did stop into Sayville Bean for a capuccino and a sketch the other day.

This house was up in Smithtown among the historic houses.

You know how I love the street corners in the small towns. This was sketched of the East Moriches Hardware Store.

Beached at Silly Lily

I took a ride to Silly Lily Fishing Station in East Moriches. Right now they are actually closed so all the boats are beached and many are shrink-wrapped. The rowboats are just overturned...not covered. The docks are pulled in too. Even with all that I can always find something to sketch there. I wonder who Lily is and if she is actually silly...

Back to Silly Lily

I always enjoy painting and sketching at Silly Lily's Fishing Station in East Moriches. I think the bright yellow building just makes me smile. This is another sketch done in the book of sketches for the art project I'm doing. I just have a few more left to do.

Sailboats

These two sailboats were in the water in East Moriches. The one on the right was moving around quite a bit making it a little challenging to draw.

Direct Watercolor #29

I was down by the water in East Moriches when I noticed this house tucked down a grassy drive and some large trees. The was a perfect spot for my 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor #29.

Silly Lily Paintings

On Saturday a friend of mine wanted to go out painting. She has her own business creating custom draperies, etc. and is always super busy lately so we haven't painted together in months. With another friend we decided to head over to the Silly Lily Fishing Station in East Moriches. I always enjoy painting there and the building really brightens up the day. There were a lot of people who came out to rent boats and we laughed because some of them were dressed more for cocktails on a deck than climbing into a rowboat or small motor boat. For some reason I don't think a silk shirt constitutes boating attire. lol

It was such a beautiful day that I did another painting, this time of one of their boats...yellow of course.

Order Here

Last Tuesday my plein air group went to Silly Lilly's Fishing Station in East Moriches. I love their bright yellow color on their buildings. The buoys and their shadows attracted me.

Boatyard

It seems like I can find some kind of boat every time I turn around. These were at the Silly Lily Fishing Station in East Moriches.

Inktober Day 23

On Saturday I was looking for a scenic farmstead to sketch. I headed out to Eastport to Olish's Farm but their displays hadn't changed and it was too crowded. I continued driving heading toward East Moriches when I saw this small farm stand called Baha Farm. I pulled over to the side of the road and found a parking spot with a view. I started sketching this focusing on the truck figuring it was going to disappear soon, and I was right. I barely got the shape done before it pulled out. I sketched for a bit and the owners started moving things. Uh-oh...they were packing up. Who packs up their farm stand at 2:00 in the afternoon? I tried to get as much into the sketch as I could before they moved it and was fairly successful before the tables were bare. It was a cute spot and I'd like to go back at some point and maybe sketch the view from across the street. I used assorted inks for this one.

Boarded Up

I took a ride the other day down to East Moriches which is about a half hour away. That's where the Silly Lily Marina is located. It is a fun place to sketch because it is so colorful and there are lots of boats around. This time almost all the boats were in drydock for the winter and the building itself was closed for the season and boarded up. It still had some charm so I sat and sketched the building. When I first started sketching over there the buildings were a little derelict. Then Hurricane Sandy came through and they rebuilt a lot of it.

Paint the Great South Bay - Part 3 - Sunflowers

Last Tuesday my plein air group invited the painters from Paint the Great South Bay to join us in East
Moriches to paint at the sunflower field we had painted at last week. This time we had sunshine not rain. I called this one "Sunflower Daze."

Sunflowers 1

Last week my plein air group, PALS met at a sunflower field in East Moriches. We usually go there to paint every summer. Unfortunately it wasn't a very nice day. I no sooner got set up and it started to drizzle. I put up my painting umbrella for protection but it started raining harder. The water was dripping right off the umbrella and onto my palette, which I had to keep turning over to drain the water out of it. The umbrella did keep the painting out of the rain. I worked on this for a while but it got too hard to continue since the watercolors weren't drying at all. I'm not sure if I will add anything to this or leave it as it is. What do you think?

30 x 30 Day 6 and Swan River Preserve

My Day 6 painting for the 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor Challenge was done in East Moriches at a garden center. The tractor (with its flat tires) was off to the side.
#30x30directwatercolor #directwatercolor2019

Last night my sketch group met at Swan River Preserve in Patchogue. There is a train trestle bridge that is always interesting to sketch. I used my brown Noodler's ink which isn't waterproof. I guess it worked but I didn't have much control of how it bled.

There was some wildlife at the preserve.

Upturned Boats

With all the rain and snow we've had this winter I guess there is a good reason for these boats to be turned over. This is a fun, old fashioned marina in East Moriches.

Harts Cove Bait & Tackle

I was out in East Moriches recently and passed this quirky bait and tackle shop....so of course I pulled over to sketch it. I loved all the things hanging on the building and piled next to it. I was painting from my car across the street in the only spot that had a really good view. The spot happened to be right next to someone's mailbox, so I was on the watch for a postal truck to come along to make a delivery. Luckily I didn't have to move for one.

Sailboat

This was painted at a private dock in East Moriches. Lucky for me that the boat stayed put.
