Boatyard Office

I hadn't been to Week's Boatyard in what seemed like a long while. Instead of sketching boats I focused on their office and the welcoming open door. There is usually something fun to sketch there.

Weeks Boat Yard Postcard

Weeks Boat Yard was the subject of another postcard that I did for the project being sent to Ukraine. I've sketched this view so many times.

Weeks Yacht Yard

I've sketched versions of this view of Weeks Yacht Yard in Patchogue so often. It always calls me when I am nearby. This is 4 x 6 for the postcard project.

Week's Boat Yard Barn

I can always find a view of something to sketch at Week's Boat Yard. It would be interesting (but impossible) to see how many sketches and paintings I have of it. lol

Weeks Boat Yard Storage

I drove over to Weeks Boat Yard in Patchogue to sketch the other day but there are so many large boats wrapped and sitting there out of the water for the winter that there was really nothing much to sketch. I ended up sketching one of their storage sheds and the things that were around it.

Inktober 2022 - Day 26 - Boatyard

For my Inktober sketch today I headed to one of my stand-by locations, Weeks Yacht Yard. There are so many little and big views that I never get tired of sketching there.

Inktober 2022 - Day 11 Weeks Boat Yard & Lighthouse Painting

A good sketching friend, Mel Barranco, often uses ballpoint pen when he sketches (especially people on his commute each morning), and I love what he does. My friend, Tina Koyama has been doing portrait sketching...often with ballpoint pen. After doing an entire sketch with ballpoint pen my hat is off to both of them. It is not easy! Filling in a solid color takes a lot of time. Using my Lamy is much easier. I don't think ballpoint pen will be my medium of choice.

This was done at one of my favorite sketching spots, Weeks Boat Yard. It may look familiar if you have followed my blog for any amount of time. There are great buildings and lots of boats that seem to move around regularly.

I have been able to get over to Robert Moses Beach on a few different nice, nearly summery days.
I can sit and see the Fire Island Lighthouse from almost anywhere there.

Boats In A Row

I did this direct watercolor looking across toward Week's Boat Yard. I had to really simplify the maze of boats that I was viewing...many in the water and many on land.

Boats on the Canal

I found a place to pull in across the canal from Weeks Boat Yard.  Over on their side there were so many boats in drydock that it was too crowded. This side was better. I was surprised that there were still so many boats in the water at this time of year. Usually almost everything is out by now.

Inktober 2020 Day 31 - Weeks Boat Yard & Faces

My Day 31 sketch for Inktober was done at one of my favorite local places. It was drizzling so I sat in my mobile studio at Weeks Boat Yard in Patchogue. What I love about that place is there is so much to sketch or paint and it always looks a little different. I don't get bored there.

Inktober is now officially over for 2020. For some reason it seemed to go quicker than it usually does. Anyway, I will be glad to get back to using my arsenal of colors again. lol

The other night one of my art groups had a Zoom meeting for the members. I am the secretary so I should have been taking notes and I did...for a while. lol Each member was asked to introduce themself and tell what they have been doing or creating this past month. There were 21 people so it took a while and I decided to sketch a bit. I didn't want to get up and miss anything so I just grabbed a piece of copy paper that had writing on one side and drew some of the faces of the members quickly with a brush pen. I should have planned this better and used better paper. I did get a few done...but not anywhere near the 21 that were sitting there. I should have started sooner.

Inktober Day 6 - Weeks Boatyard

My Day 6 Inktober sketch was done at Weeks Boatyard in Patchogue, one of my favorite sketching places in the town. The boats and rustic buildings are a favorite of mine.

Paint the Great South Bay - Part 8 - Boat Yard View & Reception

Somehow I missed posting this painting in order with the other paintings from "Paint the Great South Bay." This was painted across from Weeks Boat Yard in Patchogue, which if you follow my posts is a place I sketch and paint at often. "Boat Yard View" SOLD at the show...yay!!

Last Sunday we had the reception for "Paint the Great South Bay." Then the show was at the gallery until today. In the past the show only hung for one day. Having it hang for the whole week gave more people a chance to see it. Counting my painting there were 7 paintings that sold during the exhibition.

Here are a few photos from the reception.

Me with my two paintings. The top one sold.

Rosi Berry and her work.

Regina Halliday and her paintings.

June Long-Schulman and her work.

Pauline Hazard and her paintings.

Debbie Taylor Meekins and her artwork.

Under Wraps at Weeks Boatyard

Yesterday I drove over to Weeks Boatyard in Patchogue. As I pulled in I noticed this view with all the boats under wraps. Usually at this time of year most of the boats are shrink-wrapped and everything looks the same. I liked that these are covered with different colored tarps and the colors of the boats are still showing.

Beach Day & Inktober 2018 - Day 4

I love having beach days at this time of year and extending the feel of summer into the fall. I headed over to Smith Point Beach. We were lucky with warm temperatures, beautiful skies, and pounding surf...some of my favorite things!

For my Day 4 Inktober 2018 sketch I headed to Week's Yacht Yard (or Boat Yard). I love sketching there because there are boats, cars, buildings, and sometimes people. I used a bit of my Elegant Writer pen to get the bluish shading, my Lamy pen, and a brush pen.

PGSB Part 5

Yesterday was the last day of painting for Paint the Great South Bay. In the morning we had a "quick draw" event. Between 8 and 9 am artists had their canvas/paper stamped with my pink logo and then went to paint in a location of their choice. Linda and I went to Weeks Boat Yard which is located nearby. I can always find something there to paint. I sketched one of the boats on the other side of the marina. I was hiding in the shade from another one of the boats.

Linda was also tucked in the shade of one of the boats. She does really colorful, bright paintings...a style I love but could never do.

The artists had to be back at the front of the Patchogue Theatre promptly by 12 noon for their painting to be checked. The framed pieces were then on display from 12-1 and any people passing by the theater were asked to vote for their favorite. The winner got 2 tickets to one of the theater events.
Here are some people casting their votes.

The winning people's choice was the painting by Jeanne Salucci which is all the way over on the easel on the left.

Left to right: Beth Giacoummo (Executive Director of the Patchogue Arts Council, Jeanne Salucci, Linda Davison Matheus, Debbie Taylor Meekins, Gina Lento, and Michael Chait
Not all the artists took part in the quick draw. Some were still out painting in other locations to get their last pieces done for the event. Dropoff of the artwork was Saturday night and then the paintings were hung and the exhibit was open to the public today.

#30x30DirectWatercolor2018 - Day 8 - Week's Boatyard & Ink Sketches

Today I headed to Week's Boatyard in Patchogue for my daily painting for the #30x30DirectWatercolor2018. There is always a view of something there. lol I've painted many of them.

I never got to post these. Right after I got back from Australia the organizer for the Bellport Garden Tour contacted me and the other members of the PALS Plein Air Group. We will be painting in their garden tour next Saturday and they were looking for small black and white sketches of the selected gardens to use in their brochure that is handed out. A few of us did the rounds of the gardens doing quick sketches of something in each. These each took me about 15 minutes. Here are gardens #1-3.

This Saturday we are participating in the Bellport Garden Tour. It will be a busy day.

30 Day Challenge - Day 6 - Boat Building

Today for Day 6 of the 30 Day Painting Challenge I returned to Weeks Boatyard in Patchogue. Most of the boats are wrapped for the winter so I didn't want to make them my focus. I looked for a spot that had a building that wasn't completely blocked by buildings in storage. I liked the front of this building and I couldn't resist those red doors. This was done with gouache.

Check out some of the other artwork for the 30 Day Challenge on Leslie Saeta's blog.

I thought I would post some of the sketches done of me at the portrait party. Not all of the 13 other people in my group have posted their sketches, but here is a sampling. Notice the completely different styles.

Boatyard

When I'm not sure where to go locally to sketch, Weeks Boatyard in Patchogue is one of the good locations until all the boats are shrink wrapped for the winter. Luckily when I went the other day there were still a few being worked on and still uncovered.

Boatyard Revisited

Weeks Boatyard in Patchogue is one of those places that I can return to over and over. There are always new boats and an assortment of buildings from different angles.

Boats and a Rickety Building

Yesterday I called the Frank M. Weeks Yacht Yard in Patchogue (see yesterday's painting) to find out if we could paint in the actual boat yard. I've been there before but have always painted from my car. I explained to the owner about the Paint the Great South Bay event and he said he had no problem with some of us coming over to paint on the property. So I contacted some of my fellow artists and we headed over there.

There were a few worn looking buildings and some great boats. Here is where I set up my easel...across from a dilapidated building with lots of character.

I figured out how to set the timer on my iPhone to take a selfie while I was working. It was a cold and damp morning...note the sweatshirt. (I later changed to a fleece jacket.)
While we were painted assorted workmen came over and told us stories about the old buildings and some of the boats.

Here is my completed painting.

Several other artists joined in and painted.

Cindy working on her painting.
Gina painting one of the buildings in pastel.

Cindy trying to keep her painting dry.

You'll notice that Cindy has an umbrella up. It started to rain lightly just about the time I was finishing up my painting so I put it in the car quickly so the watercolors wouldn't get wet. Cindy wanted to at least finish her boat before stopping. I think she was successful with that part but still needed to do the trees.
