The NYC Urban Sketchers had a wonderful location for us to sketch on Halloween. This historic house on Albemarle Road in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn is well known for their Halloween display with a huge collection of life-sized animatronics and skeletons that climb all over the Victorian architecture. There is a wrap-around porch with 6 different sections, each with their own related cast of characters. My first sketch was of the sinister, spooky clowns. One had a monkey in a box that would pop up at set times, another had a wheel connected to his head that would spin round and round. Complete with noises and music this porch section was very entertaining.
Later I went around the corner to sketch another porch section. The location is so popular that there are metal barricades closing the street to keep the side section free from vehicle traffic. These characters were even more scary than the first group. The front lawn by each section has tombstones and statues peeking out between the foliage.
It must be really something to see at night when it is lit up. The home owners love doing this for the community to enjoy and update it a bit each year for the neighbors to see something new added.
