Porch Seating

The yellows grabbed my attention as well as the seating on the porch. Autumn colors are the best!

By the Lake

My plein air group met by the Yaphank Lake to sketch and then drop off our paintings for our annual show that was last weekend. I'm happy to say the show went well, and I sold a few pieces. Yay!

One of our members was sitting at the table sketching and this young man had been fishing. Of course he stopped before I caught the correct position for his fishing rod...so typical.

Autumn View by the Marina

Down in West Sayville I spied a spot where I could see a bit of a marina peeking through the autumn leaves. After the rain the other night and the wind this week the trees are looking pretty bare. I'm lucky I sketched this when I could.

Goodbye, Friend & Pathway Thru the Color

It is with great sadness that I report that my internet friend, Michael Perchard passed away today. He was known on Facebook as Michael East Boston. Although I never met him in person, his constant support, good humor, and artistic joy gave us a special connection. Michael loved painting the ocean...and waves. He went out of his way to be nice to people. He was a big supporter of organ donations and received a double lung transplant in 2017. Without the immunity we count on to fight off sickness, he recently caught Covid twice and didn't survive this last bout. His posts always made me smile and I will miss him. Wait for us in that big art studio in heaven, Michael!

I can still find autumn colors if I search hard enough. There are a lot of areas where the leaves are all off the trees. This was painted in Brookhaven.

Local Color

This time I didn't go far. This scene was right outside our development.

Yellows and Golds

I am still lucky enough to find some locations with a lot of autumn color, like this spot in Bayport.

Autumn in Bayport

I am starting to find a little more color around my area. Does that mean there is more to come? I hope so!

Autumn Colors

The autumn colors here are slowly disappearing, so I'm trying to capture them when I see them. This was done locally.

Autumn Golds

It is hard not to stop short in my tracks when I see the splendid colors on the trees when the sun is shining.

Truck with Autumn Trees

I am still finding new spots of beautiful autumn colors to sketch. I liked this scene with the truck in the driveway.

Colorful Corner

I wonder how many miles I put on my car each fall looking for autumn colors. Although most of the leaves have fallen off the trees every once in a while I find a spot with some color. This was on a corner in Blue Point. I edited out the street signs.

Field in Autumn

I've been continuing my search for autumn color before the leaves are all off the trees. This was done in East Patchogue.

Quogue Wildlife Preserve

The day that I sketched the goose below, I was working on a watercolor of the view by the lake. The leaves here have finally come into color. It had been a drizzly morning and I did have the option to paint from inside. I liked this view better...and the rain held off the rest of the morning.

Brookhaven Fall

It was damp and rainy for most of today with a few clear periods of time. I drove to Brookhaven and parked in front of a field. I liked the color of the trees as well as the autumnal grasses.

Autumn Colors

It seems like overnight and the autumn colors popped. Yahoo!!!  The color is still in selected areas but this is the first true impressive color we have seen here on Long Island this season. When I saw the touches of color this morning I took a ride over to South Country Road in East Patchogue which usually has these impressive red/orange colored trees. They didn't disappoint today! Even though the temperatures were very mild for November I sat in my car (with the windows open) to paint because I was on a fairly busy street. As I told a photo to post this on my blog I noticed I forgot to paint the double yellow stripe down the center of the road...right now it is white.

Arboretum Autumn

Here is another painting I just finished up. This was done at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Oakdale a few weeks ago.

Blazing Trees

With the lack of color in most of our trees this autumn, I get very excited when I see a pop of color. I was heading home the other day when it was overcast and damp. I was passing through Patchogue when I noticed these colorful trees in a line by the Patchogue Train Station. In order to get a good view I parked at an angle across a few parking spaces so I was facing in the correct direction. People who park in the lot had already parked and headed off hours ago, so I knew there wouldn't be anyone who would come to park in those spaces. I was happy with the results.

Another Autumn Path

I knew there was a reason I was doing so many autumn paintings...because the leaves would soon be gone. I did this one (which looks a lot like the one I posted yesterday minus the people) on a wet, drizzly day here in NY this week. I had to keep putting on my wipers as I sat in the car.

Walk to the Water

I love paths that head down the street. This was done locally of a path that headed toward the bay with Fire Island in the background.

Autumn on Long Island

Here are two more small autumn paintings I did. I love looking down some of the narrow side streets and seeing just an abundance of color going all the way back.

This one was painted on South Powells Road in Bellport.

Arthur Avenue in Brookhaven was the location for this one.
