Bellport Street Corner

This ink and wash sketch was also done for the Creative Spark Scavenger Hunt. The prompt was a street.

Shadows in Bellport

This particular view in Bellport is a favorite spot of mine to sketch or paint. There are always strong shadows along Bellport Lane looking down to the Bellport Dock.

Up the Hill

In Bellport there is a street that runs parallel to the water at the end of Bellport Lane. The street goes up a hill after you pass the entrance to the Bellport Dock. With the flowers in bloom it looks really nice.

Welcoming Porch

There are so many houses in nearby Bellport that call to be sketched. The spring greens are in full swing on the trees and grasses. I could be happy sitting on that chair on the porch. How about you?

24 Bellport Lane

Many of the big, beautiful houses on Bellport Lane are hidden behind shrubbery for most of the year. Right now the foliage is sparse and you can see the lovely houses behind them. A little snow adds to their charm.

Vanderzalm Greenhouse Christmas Trees

Today I was in the Bellport area doing a bit of Christmas shopping. I stopped by the Vanderzalm Greenhouses just to check if they had anything Christmasy to sketch. They did! There was a small display of Christmas trees out in front. I didn't go inside to check out what else they had. I probably should have.

Color in Bellport

My ride to Bellport was very productive when I saw this colorful view on Bellport Lane.

Yellows and Greens of Autumn

Finding autumn colors really excites me. I have to search for some trees that are red. The yellow ones seem to be easier to find. This was done in Bellport.

On the Hill

There are some large white homes along Bellport Lane in Bellport. Some of the houses art up on a hill from the street, like this one. It is up high with I'm sure what is a great view of the Great South Bay and the Bellport Dock.

Sailing Class

Several times a week there is a sailing class for kids in Bellport. All the kids show up and start getting their small sailboats ready to go out for a lesson. I was there early so that I sketch out the scene before they moved off. I also took a few photos to use as references. While they were out on the water and out of sight I worked on the sky and the surrounding objects in the area. This was done during the SBAA plein air event.

Main Street Bellport

I am participating in a plein air paint out sponsored by the South Bay Art Organization. Artists can paint in Bellport, Brookhaven, or East Patchogue. Then each artist selects one of their paintings to be on display and for sale at Bellport Day which is this Saturday. Since most of the people who come to the festival are actually residents of Bellport, or people who are there for the summer I tried to do scenes that will connect with them like this one of Main Street. I got a lot of positive feedback from people walking around the town on Friday.

You can see a bit of how it began here.

Vanderzalm Greenhouses

My plein air painting group has been going out on Tuesday mornings since May. I painted this at the Vanderzalm Greenhouses in Bellport. I started it on site, but didn't have enough time to finish it there. We had a stretch of rainy days so I decided I should work on some of my unfinished pieces like this one while I was indoors.

Bellport Dock

The spring greens have taken over the foliage.

This was painted looking up Bellport Lane from the dock.

At the very end of the dock are a few parking spaces with a railing. There are a few benches too. I had planned to sketch the person who owned this bike, who was sitting on the bench right in front of the railing, but he took off before I could sketch him. I'm lucky I got the bike done before he left.

TLC Needed

One of the items on the list for the Creative Spark Scavenger Hunt was "barn." This one in Bellport looks like it needs a little TLC.

Roadwork in Bellport

As I was driving through Bellport the other day I noticed they were doing some kind of roadwork on Main Street. I passed the guy holding the "slow" sign and turned my car around until I was parked behind him. He seemed a little more interested in something in the car that he was snacking on rather than the traffic (which is very slow in Bellport at this time of year).

Vanderzalm Barn

This interesting building is part of the Vanderzalm Nursery in Bellport. I'm always attracted to the old gas pump outside.

Coffee Anyone?

There are several coffee shops in Bellport and Bellport General is one of them. I haven't tried their coffee and I haven't been inside...yet.

Bellport Corner House

This house on the corner in Bellport must have wonderful views of the water. It is set back up a hill with no houses in front of it to obstruct the view of the water. I can imagine being inside that front room and using it as an art studio.

Bellport Apothecary

I've sketched the Bellport Apothecary before, so I looked for a new view. This time I was looking right at the building. Seems like I forgot to fill in the menu boards. That would make things confusing for customers. lol
