Port Jefferson has a small ice skating rink called Rinx. I hadn't been up there for a while, but it is a great spot to watch the skaters. It is right outside the Port Jefferson Village Center. The skaters and their families are downstairs in the center, but upstairs has a great area with comfy couches overlooking the rink. For most of the time I was the only one up there. Here is the sketch I did there previously.

Cedar Beach View #2
After sketching from the boardwalk at Cedar Beach (see yesterday's post) I decided to go down on the sand. Right by the bottom step of the board I found a spot to sit where I could see down the beach along the dunes and grasses. The sky was getting some interesting clouds and color. Along the water's edge there were several fishermen with their rods. In addition to my regular watercolors I used a soft charcoal pencil and a few watercolor pencils. The headlands in the background are part of Port Jefferson.

Flowers by the Steps
Recently I had a few paintings in a show with one of my art groups. They were displayed for the month of April in Port Jeff. When the show was over I drove up to pick them up. While I was in Port Jeff I sat and sketched the steps and flowers along the street. Port Jeff is very hilly so the house here was above me, but I liked this view down below.

Port Jeff Blooms
For a while I was able to find cherry trees in bloom almost everywhere. This one was up in Port Jeff on a hilly street.

Chevy Parked in Port Jeff
I was riding around looking for a shop to sketch since I was up in Port Jeff to drop off paintings. I saw this 2019 Chevy Corvette ZR1 parked in front of one of the stores. I couldn't resist it! I sketched the car first figuring it would move soon...but it didn't. I'm not a car buff so I Googled a photo of it to find out what kind of car it was.

Port Jeff Looking Down
Port Jeff (Port Jefferson) is quite hilly. If you are lucky enought to find parking up one of the hilly streets you get a nice view down toward Main Street.

Port Jeff Staircase
Port Jeff (Port Jefferson) is a harbor town on the north shore. Many of the streets are very steep and involve a lot of climbing. This house is down by the marina. I can't imagine arriving home with packages that need to be carried up all those stairs. I guess you would get a lot of cardio exercise.

Steps Above Port Jeff
I like painting up in Port Jefferson. The houses on the north shore aren't on flat land like they are here on the south shore...so they are often on hills, or slightly raised above street level. This house had quite a few steps from the street level up to the front door. Of course I love the white picket fence in front.

Port Jeff Parking Lot View
It is fun to sketch in Port Jeff...if you can find parking. lol I like sketching the buildings that are on the hill. It was easy at this time of year and midweek.

Blue House on the Hill
Port Jeff is a fun place to sketch houses if you can find parking. I lucked out near this blue house and sat across from it. Whenever I sit on a hill to paint or sketch I pray that I don't drop anything and have to go chasing it down the hill. lol

Along Main Street
I was up in Port Jeff the other day and found a parking space right by some umbrellas and colorful flowers. It was meant to be sketched. Done from my mobile studio which had the best view.

Ice Skaters in Port Jeff
On Saturday it was pretty cold so my plan was to find an indoor location and hopefully have a view of the outdoors. I remembered that the Village Center in Port Jefferson has an upstairs with huge windows and plush leather couches and it overlooks the harbor. I headed upstairs only to realize that there is a perfect view looking over the Rinx Skating Rink there. The sign upstairs said "No food or drink!" but it didn't say anything about water and watercolors. Sketching moving people isn't easy but they tend to go back into the same positions over and over. The girl in the pink with the long hair would twirl every once in a while, but it was hard to catch her in action so I had to settle for this position. The little kid with the black helmet was a speed demon and was racing around the ice really fast. Of course when I was already finished with him he slowed down and was taking a skating lesson.
When I was finished and putting my belongings back into my backpack a woman approached me from behind. She asked if she could take a photo of my sketch. When I turned around I saw that she was the mother of the little girl in the green jacket who was with her. I think the dad was seated at a table near me, had seen what I was sketching and called his wife on the phone to come up and see it. Of course I let her take the photo and chatted with them for a minute. Sketching creates interesting connections with other people.

Port Jeff Boat
I don't know how this painting escaped being posted since it was done probably two weeks ago. There is a big boatyard in Port Jeff. Most of the boats are covered but there are always a few that aren't like this one.

Port Jeff Water View
I like wandering in the towns out here that are along the water. Port Jeff (Port Jefferson) has a lot of old, quaint houses in the town and overlooking the water like this one. I sat in the empty parking lot of one of the town marinas to get this view looking up into the hills.

Port Jeff View
I'm still trying to sketch some bigger views of the towns near me. This is Port Jeff. Usually I sketch one or two of the buildings there. I've never tried to do an expansive view of the town before. Port Jefferson is on Long Island Sound and you can take a ferry from Port Jeff to Bridgeport. I was sketching facing away from the water.

Inktober 2022 - Days 18 & 19
My Day 18 sketch was done by the Bayport dock. I used my Lamy pen that is filled with Noodler's brown ink which is water-soluble.
Today's Day 19 Inktober sketch was done in Port Jefferson (Port Jeff to the locals) on East Main Street.
While I was in town I sat in my car up along Spring Street, one of the steep streets that look back to the town and toward the First United Methodist Church. This 4 x 6 postcard and the Inktober sketch will be part of my postcard collection going to the troops. I am debating if I should add color to the Inktober sketch from today and yesterday before I send them out. What do you think?

30 x 30 Direct Watercolor - Day 25
Day 25 of the 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor Challenge was done up in Port Jeff at one of the businesses by the waterfront.

30 x 30 Direct Watercolor - Day 3
Here is my day 3 painting for the 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor Challenge. This was done on location in Port Jefferson before picking up paintings that were hanging in a show. I was very happy with the way this came out. 5 x 7

Port Jeff House
I like sketching in Port Jefferson. Many of the buildings are on hills or slopes, so they are different to sketch. This house was right in the middle of town where the shops are. Of course it was uphill.
