Cedar Beach View #3

With the sky changing so quickly at Cedar Beach I decided to do one more quick sunset painting from the same spot on the beach. Sunsets are difficult in watercolor because you don't really have time for the layers of color to dry long enough before you are adding more color. This painting is a little looser. I was somewhat successful. Of course the sailboats came out for the sunset and it was a bit difficult to sneak one into the wet paint.

Cedar Beach View #2

After sketching from the boardwalk at Cedar Beach (see yesterday's post) I decided to go down on the sand. Right by the bottom step of the board I found a spot to sit where I could see down the beach along the dunes and grasses. The sky was getting some interesting clouds and color. Along the water's edge there were several fishermen with their rods. In addition to my regular watercolors I used a soft charcoal pencil and a few watercolor pencils. The headlands in the background are part of Port Jefferson.

Cedar Beach View #1

A friend suggested heading up to Cedar Beach in Mt Sinai to do sunset paintings recently. We got up there about 4:30 and were joined by a third artist. For my first painting I sat on the boardwalk and was overlooking the dunes. The sky kept changing.

Cedar Beach

My plein air group recently went up to Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. It is on the Long Island Sound and has some nice sandy areas like this one.

Mount Sinai View

Last week I rode up to Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. The beach is on the north shore of Long Island along the sound. There is a beach as well as a marina. I noticed this area of sand that must have been piled up there for a long time because shrubs and trees had started growing out of it. This was on the marina side. The beach itself was on the opposite side of the road.

Salt Shack Sketches

My friend and I planned to meet at a car show at Tobay Beach along Ocean Parkway to sketch. By the time I got near the beach, the backup traffic was at a standstill and I had been sitting in traffic for more than an hour and still had a long distance to go. I called her to let her know I wasn't going to make it, and as soon as traffic inched along enough for me to make a u-turn I left.

As I was heading home I came near Cedar Beach, and I noticed people entering the parking lot. I decided to check and see if the beach building was open. I was surprised that not only the bathrooms but the restaurant (Salt Shack) and bar were open too (but with limited food). It was a beautiful, sunny day and a lot of people were enjoying the outdoors. I sat on a fence by the dunes to capture this view of the building.

When I finished I grabbed something to eat and headed back outside. There was a live band playing on the outside deck and everyone was enjoying the music and the sun. Right in front of me was a couple with a lady in a wheelchair. From their interaction I assume that the older lady was the woman's mom or grandmother. As the music played they held hands and moved to the music. It was a really sweet scene, and I couldn't pass up sketching it. I may have missed sketching at the car show, but I thoroughly enjoyed the day!

Direct Watercolor #14 & 15

My plein air group headed to Cedar Beach in Mt Sinai last Tuesday. This was done for the 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor Challenge, painting #14.  I've painted there before but always on the side with the boats, marina, and fishing pier.

I headed over to Weeks Yacht Yard to find a subject for painting #15. The boats are finally mostly uncovered. Yay!!

Cedar Beach

The other day I went up to Port Jeff where they were having a winter festival with ice carvings and all kinds of things. After riding around and around without finding parking I gave up. I headed over to Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. The dunes attracted me for a sketch.

Across the Water & Zentangle

While I was up at Cedar Beach I changed locations within the park and went down by the pier. I sat in my mobile studio looking at this scene while I had lunch.  I really wanted to do this but it looked like too much playing around to get the shrubbery on the cliff to look right. I took a chance and pulled out just my regular sketching pencil and I liked the result. I don't know if those big buildings are private homes, but considering I was in a rather wealthy area it is possible. The one on the left looks like it should be a hotel.

This morning I did another Sketchbook Revival session. This was with Melinda Barlow on the Art of Zentangle. I've tangled before but never with such floral designs. This was fun and is about 5 inches square.

Mount Sinai Waterview and Sketchbook School Street

I drove up to Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai on Saturday. Mount Sinai is on the north side of Long Island where there are bluffs along Long Island Sound. The landscape is a bit different than the south shore...still a lot of water but the land down here is pretty flat. There was a mound of sand by the water and beyond that was a sand bar and across the inlet some rather large, expensive houses.

I have been working on my "Collage the Street" from Karen Stamper's Sketchbook Revival lesson a little bit at a time. I think it is finally done.

Over the Dunes

The other day I knew I needed a little time to visit the beach. It was cold so I found a spot to park overlooking the dunes at Cedar Beach along Ocean Road. Off in the distance you can see Fire Island.

30 Day Challenge - Day 20 - Road to the Marina

I was up near Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai today. The day had started out sunny but by the time I drove up there it was cloudy. I drove all the way to the end of the road and nothing jumped out at me. However when I turned around and saw how the road curved right in front of the marina I knew I had found the location for my Day 20 painting for the "30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge." Don't forget to check out some of the other great work by the other artists participating in the challenge. You can find their work here.

Cold Day at Cedar Beach

They had forecast a mild day the other day and a friend of mine wanted to play hockey from work and go out plein air painting. So we headed to Cedar Beach near Port Jefferson. The temp reached about 45 degrees and we were bundled up in layers, so for the most part we were comfortable for about an hour and a half. This is about 7 x 9.

Here I am all bundled up by the rowboats.

Here is Susan painting.

As much as we thought it was cold, a man and woman came along while we were packing up. The man had on a wetsuit and sandals. The next thing we knew he was swimming in the water. It takes all kinds. lol
