Red Barn and Silos

On Saturday my sister and I drove up to Middletown, NY to pick up paintings we had in the North East Watercolor Society's Member's Show. Afterwards we took a ride into Goshen to look for and sketch some barns in the area. We tend to sketch the same barns each time because they are the only ones we find that we can park near. lol I have painted this several times before but I decided to do it much closer this time. It was cold and damp so we sketched from my portable studio. This is about 5 x 7.

Here is the sketch with the scene I was painting. As you can see the barns were quite a distance away.

  1. Nice job on the barns Joan. They look so far away though, were you wearing binoculars? :) Funny thing, we have a town called Goshen here too, and you'll find barns there as well.

  2. Lovely job. I love barns too and have some great ones around here. You make me want to get out and sketch them...almost.. lol.. take some pix and then do them maybe. :)

  3. I love seeing your sketches and saying to myself how often they are much more interesting to view than the real view. I would drive past some of those scenes and think they wouldn't make a painting but you show me otherwise. You eye must be well trained Joan. How lovely too that your sister joins you in your travel and sketching

  5. What a masterful job you did of pulling those farm buildings closer to you! I think this is wonderful, Joan! Please do show some of your sister's work some time too!

  6. David - They weren't that far away. lol Thanks.

Cris - Either way go paint them!! Thank you.

Lorraine - Thanks. It is fun to have company once in a while when I sketch, but solo is good too.

Hilda - Thanks. There are a number of them but finding them is another thing. You need a local person who knows where they are. The ones we paint you can see from Route 17.

Sherry - Thanks so much. My sister is the last one on my links list "Michelle's Watercolors" because she was the first one I ever listed. lol Also she is under "Mickey's Sketches."

  7. This one came out really well. It's funny that we sit next to each other and sometimes don't get to really see each other's work until we post them. LOL! Lorraine is right - you have the ability to take a scene and make it look better than real life.
