Tracks in the Snow

After our snow last week I headed over to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Oakdale to take a few snow photos. I saw this spot with the bench and the tracks in the snow and knew I had to go back and paint it. Luckily this was right by the parking lot, so I parked facing in right in front of it.
This is 5 x 7.

  1. Nicely done Joan. I really need to start getting out to the park to sketch again, I have no excuse really, it's been a mild January here.

  3. Joan, what is your favorite paint when making shadows in snow? Is this some combo of ultramarine and something else...? Just curious what you have on your palette usually! :-) Do you ever blog about your colors?

  4. What a perfect composition and it has made a lovely painting. Lucky you being able to park so close

  5. Gorgeous, Joan! I love the texture in the tree bark too. Another personal proof of why I love winter!

  6. David - Thanks. I'm always searching for a spot where I can sit in the car since it has been so cold here.

Cris - Thanks. I can let you sit in the back seat. I usually have my paints balanced on the passenger seat in the front.

Tina - I used mostly ultramarine with touches of sepia. I haven't blogged about my colors in a long time. A few years ago I did a big post on WetCanvas about my plein air travel setup. I'll have to go back and see if it is there and post a link to it.

Polly - Thank you. I know there are enough trees close to the parking lot so I would be able to paint something, even if it wasn't really inspired. lol

Sherry - Thanks. I like (not love) winter when I am seeing the snow...but warm at the same time. lol

  7. Great tracks in the snow and also great shadows on the rest of the ground. As Polly said, this is a good composition, it's very inviting. Love the combination of both warm and cool colours in the previous "Grasses" post too. I've rarely seen warm colours used as successfully as yours in cold subjects. Winter suits you!!

  8. I start my day reading blogs and looking at lovely snow scenes like yours and then along comes our heat. We are in for more than a week of over 40. Guess we are experiencing extremes the world over

Lorraine - Yes, the weather has been so strange everywhere. Thanks so much.
