Mini Pies

We went to my sister-in-law's house for Thanksgiving dinner. Karen likes to prepare most of the meal herself, but asked me to bring a pie (pecan if possible). Since there were only going to be four of us for dinner I know we always have too much left over. She was already making a pumpkin pie so I made a small pecan pie in a pyrex dish and a mini blueberry pie in a small springform pan because that is Jerry's favorite. In fact I made a second mini blueberry for him to have at home. The mini pies worked well...just enough for dinner and one slice of pecan to bring home.

Happy Thanksgiving

The autumn colors that are still around fit perfectly with the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope that today you find time to appreciate the people and things that make your life special. My thanks to all of you who stop by to visit my blog and some of you who leave such nice comments. I appreciate all of you!

Happy Thanksgiving!

This was painted by one of the walkways at Sunken Meadow State Park in Smithtown.

Thanksgiving Theme

On Wednesday last week my sketch group met at the library and our theme for the night was Thanksgiving. (Due to the holiday prep we aren't meeting this week.) Tina & Brian (married sketchers) brought two 1/2 pies to sketch (blueberry and pumpkin) and cut them up into small pieces. That was good because you know what I am like when I try to sketch food. It always has a bite or two taken out...if it survives at all. lol It was easier to resist in the company of other sketchers. Maybe that is the secret.

We also had several still life setups on the table. This one included gourds, a pumpkin, and a small scarecrow.

Happy Thanksgiving

 Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I am so thankful for many, many things this year. I hope you are too. One of the things I am very thankful for are my fellow artists who are so supportive and encouraging. Thank you!

Last week when the Patchogue Sketch Club met at the library we each brought things that would fit with a cornucopia. We had a little of everything stretched out across the table.

Brussel Sprouts

Somehow the stalk of Brussel sprouts I bought before Thanksgiving was forgotten and I didn't post it. Sketching this wasn't easy because it is so long. I really needed a panoramic sketchbook to fit this without resorting to using two pages in one of my sketchbooks. Instead I did it in an 11 x 14 sketchbook where I do several sketches on one page. I just marked out an area that looked like it was big enough to fit this.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who are celebrating.
Thanksgiving is nearing its end here on the east coast. I hope your Thanksgiving went better than the one in this video. It is one of my favorite scenes from "Raymond." I think we all need a laugh at the end of the day.

This morning I did a food related sketch for the Wet Canvas Scavenger Hunt. The item was "Something I don't like to eat."

Happy Thanksgiving and City Views Part I

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. There are many things I am thankful for in my life.  To those of you who visit here, leave comments, and offer encouragement I want to say that I am very thankful for your friendship.  It means a lot!

I was planning on meeting the NYC Urban Sketchers last Saturday, but they weren't meeting until 11. If I go into the city I try to get in early so that I have a full day, especially since it takes so long from out here. I was in the city by 9:15 and went to Union Square first. They have a Saturday market there that has wonderful stalls, like this one with all the colorful veggies.

Next I headed further downtown to the area around where the World Trade Center had been. The sketchers were meeting at St. Paul's Chapel with was right in the shadow of the falling towers but somehow survived. I couldn't fit the whole chapel in the sketch but managed to focus a bit on the top.

Briermere Farm Before Thanksgiving

I usually try to do my posts in order and am usually a few days ahead, but I wanted to post this now since it has a Thanksgiving theme. Briermere Farm in Riverhead is famous here on Long Island. People swear they have the best pies around (especially their blueberry cream). I've only tasted the strawberry-rhubarb and it was good, but that combination is not one of my favorites. I'll have to try another one some day. Anyhow, for Thanksgiving they do an awesome business. People drive out there from as far as NYC, which is about 80 miles. Most customers order pies ahead of time and expect to stand on line when they get there to pick them up.

I was thinking about where to go sketching today and decided to head out there and sketch the crowd. What a circus! It wasn't easy to find parking and I wanted to sketch from the car since it was cold out. I finally got a spot in the side lot that very few people seem to realize is there. I didn't have much of a view but patiently waited for the woman parked next to me to leave and took her spot. It had a great side view of the  building between the trees. Most people came out with several pies and many with full cartons. LOL  I watched the clock a few times to see how long people stood on line before they returned to their cars with the pies. It seemed to be about 15 minutes. I happily just sketched and will make my own pecan pie later today. Hope you have something delicious to have tomorrow!
