Brussel Sprouts

Somehow the stalk of Brussel sprouts I bought before Thanksgiving was forgotten and I didn't post it. Sketching this wasn't easy because it is so long. I really needed a panoramic sketchbook to fit this without resorting to using two pages in one of my sketchbooks. Instead I did it in an 11 x 14 sketchbook where I do several sketches on one page. I just marked out an area that looked like it was big enough to fit this.

Fundraiser Painting #2

I worked on another painting for the fundraiser for the Long Island Maritime Museum in Sayville. The second piece of shingle is a very odd-shaped piece. It is 18 inches by 1 1/2 inches at its widest. I thought for a long time about what the painting should be. At first I was going to do a wave but instead decided to do a view across the marsh right at the grounds of the Maritime Museum. I've done many paintings and sketches of that view but never in such a panoramic size. The center part is mostly the actual view but since I had to extend it because of the length of the shingle piece, I had to use artistic license to add to the scene on the right and the left. This was done in acrylic over gesso.

The shingles will be part of an auction/sale as a fundraiser for the Maritime Museum this year.

The Beach

The theme for the NYC Urban Sketchers this week is the beach. Since I can't get down there at this point in time I relied on a photo I took at Robert Moses State Park last summer. The waves always fascinate me. This was done on a Hahnemuhle Watercolor Postcard that I was sent to try. Carol Boss who is the Marketing Service Manager for their USA branch sent a batch of them to the NYC Urban Sketchers to try. Interested members each got a few to work on. I like the panoramic size and the paper handles the watercolor nicely and the paint lifts easily. I give it a thumbs up!

Inktober Day 29 - Lenny Bruno Farms

For Day 29 of Inktober I did a sketch of pumpkins spilling out of their baskets. This was done at Lenny Bruno Farms in Manorville.

I also liked this red barn that I could see across the field, so I sat there and did a painting of it. I only had 8 x 10 watercolor paper with me and I knew that this called for a panoramic size so I taped off part of the paper. This is about 4 x 10.
