Patchogue Lighthouse View

Recently the Patchogue Sketch Club went to the Sandspit Marina in Patchogue for our sketch night. Right off the end of the parking area is a small lighthouse that we all sketched.

Lighthouse View

The Patchogue Lighthouse is small (22 ft high) and is located in Sandspit Marina. This solar powered lighthouse was erected in 2019 and guides recreational sailors and Fire Island Ferry Captains in and out of the Patchogue River.

Drift 82

Drift 82 is a seafood restaurant along the canal by Sandspit Marina in Patchogue. I sketched along the outside deck of the restaurant and caught the hostess and a waitress in action. If you look at the mileage markers on the right, all the places listed are Fire Island Beaches. From the Sandspit Marina you can catch a ferry to some of them.

Lighthouse and Gull

This was sketched down at the Sandspit Marina in Patchogue. Wasn't it nice of the gull to pose with the lighthouse nearby? This is another sketch in the Arteza sketchbook for the SBAA project.

Beer and Cocktails

Down by the Fire Island Ferry at the Sandspit Marina in Patchogue is a cute building that apparently sells beer and cocktails as you wait for your ferry. As the sign says, "There's Always the Next Ferry."

Sandspit Lighthouse

On Wednesday the Patchogue Sketch Club met at the Sandspit Marina for an evening of sketching by the lighthouse. It was a very windy night and several people tried using easels because they were painting for a plein air event, but the easels kept blowing over. I tried resting my palette on a wall since I had to really hold onto my sketchbook, but it also kept blowing off. Instead I pulled out a folding chair that I had in my car and put it against the wall. I put the palette on the seat of the chair. It worked!

Inktober 2020 Days 21 & 22

Somehow I missed posting my Day 21 Inktober sketch yesterday, so here it is. This was sketched from my mobile studio parked in front of a local Tex-Mex restaurant called Salsa Salsa.

Today's Inktober Day 22 sketch was done at Sandspit Marina in Patchogue. This new 22 foot-tall lighthouse extends into Patchogue Bay. On this foggy day there wasn't much visibility so I'm sure this little lighthouse was a help to the boats coming into the dock area.

Beach Path

Today was one of those days that just screamed beach. It was sunny and warm, but a bit too breezy to actually sit on the beach. I went over to Robert Moses State Park and sat and sketched. I socially distanced myself inside my mobile studio. The parking lot was crowded but there was plenty of room for people to spread out.

Yesterday I was in Patchogue buying a few things that I needed before Jerry comes home. While I was there I went down to Sandpit Marina and did a continuous line sketch of the little lighthouse and some people. I haven't done a continuous line in a long time, but it was fun to do.

Sandspit Marina...Return Visit

Back in December I went down to sketch at Sandpit Marina in Patchogue where they are doing some kind of improvements to the rock jetty. HERE is my sketch done back then. A friend asked me the other day if I had been down there recently. She heard that the other day they had machinery out on the jetty and that eventually they will be adding a small lighthouse at the end of the jetty. I decided to go investigate and see if there was anything going on there that was sketch worthy. The rocks they had been digging out of the water were now boulders that were sitting in the parking lot. Nothing was happening out on the jetty yet, but there were a lot of pilings all over the area. I focused on that today. I will have to keep checking to see what else they do.

Sandspit Marina

I overheard a woman talking the other day about the work being done down at Sandspit Marina in Patchogue. Apparently from the recent hurricanes and storms the jetty and part of the marina needs to be replaced, so there are several construction vehicles working there now taking out some of the rocks, silt, and whatever that is along the end of the marina. It must be a fascinating spot because while I sat there in my car there were a fair number of vehicles that pulled up to face the construction area to watch the work. Of course the majority of the cars were driven by men...I guess the construction "toys" were too good to pass up. The machine I sketched was in constant motion but the good thing was the base stayed put and only the top rotated...and it always returned to the same position. I did leave out the chain link fencing that separated the public from the action, but made sure to put in that danger sign just in case.
