The Meeting

 Last week one of my art groups held their August General Meeting outside at the Bellport Marina. It turned out to be a very cool evening with most of us wearing hoodies or sweatshirts. Since we are artists several of the members were sketching while we talked and later listened to the information about the upcoming events. My thanks to Loretta, Jackie, Casey, Val and Laurie for being such good models.

Paint the Great South Bay 2015 - Part II

Thursday was the second day of the plein air event, "Paint the Great South Bay." The gallery where we are hosting  the show is in Bellport, so I decided to spent my day there doing local scenes. There is a house that I sketched several years ago that I always wanted to go back and do a painting of....and now was my chance. I set up my easel and materials across the street from the house and painted away for about 2 1/2 hours. The woman in the house came out twice to her car that was parked in the driveway and then a third time drove out of the driveway and right past me. Wouldn't you at least wave to a person who is obviously painting your house? It seemed strange.

Here is my 8 x 10 painting titled "South Shore Charm." This is one of the pieces that I ended up putting into the show.

My friend from SBAA came by to take photos for our organization of the artists she could find. (We were all posting our locations on the Facebook page for Paint the Great South Bay. Here is the photo Michele DiPaolo took of me.

I stopped at the Paper Cup Studio in town to eat my lunch and cool off. It was a hot, humid day! Then I headed out to do a second painting. This is also 8 x 10 and is of one of the local restaurants...Porters. Because this was in town it was more difficult to sketch because cars kept coming and parking in front of it. We could only put in 3 paintings, so this one is not in the show.

Paint the Great South Bay 2015 - Part I

I signed up to take part in a plein air event called "Paint the Great South Bay" being sponsored by SBAA, one of my local art groups. I think we had about 32 artists participating. This was the second year this has been held and I participated last year too. We could paint beginning on Wednesday and ending on Saturday. Each artist would be able to hang 2/3 paintings at the gallery at the end of the show.

The rules were to paint en plein air somewhere on the south shore of Long Island between Islip to the west and Mastic to the east and south of Sunrise Highway. It gave us a large area to find locations and after having my papers stamped for the event I met several other artists at Smith Point Beach on Wednesday evening. A few of us painted from the decks of the ranger's station which was empty at the time. It afforded a good aerial view of the beach in both directions. I was facing west, so the setting sun was in my eyes. In addition, the mosquitoes must have thought the Off I sprayed on my body was something delicious. I now have bites the size of Texas. LOL But we persevered. Here is the painting I did. This is about 7 x 10.

Artists on the Lane

Saturday was SBAA's annual "Artists on the Lane" in Bellport. This is an organization that I belong to, and although I didn't exhibit in the show, I was there. This is a big fundraiser for the South Bay Art Associations's Student Scholarship Show held every November. I was selling raffle tickets for donated paintings and also found a little time to sketch the view of some of the vendors at the show.

Paint the Great South Bay - Part 1

I had a very busy weekend. One of the art organizations I belong to (South Bay Art Association) organized the "Paint the Great South Bay Plein Air Event and Show." From Thursday until Sunday the participating artists painted in locations of their choice on the south shore of Long Island. There were about 30 artists taking part, some painting solo and some in small groups. On Suday afternoon each artist was able to put in two paintings they had done for a show that will run from now to Sept. 20th in a gallery in Bellport.

I started on Thursday afternoon in West Sayville near the town dock. There is a marine repair company there that I have done several sketches of in the past, but never a full painting. Usually there is some rusty boat that they are scraping and sanding, but on Thursday it was a nice boat with not quite as much character...but I painted it anyway. I set up my chair, easel, and an umbrella behind my car. I didn't want to be in anyone's way so I stayed outside the fence.

This was the view I had.

I did attract the attention of the owner and the workmen, and some of them came over to look and comment.

I made plans with my friend, Rosamaria to meet the following monring for surmise at the dock in Bellport. I checked the schedule and sunrise was at 6:06, so we met at 5:30 AM hoping to catch some of the color before the sun came up. Here are a few photos of the sunrise.

Here I am all bundled up...it was quite cold down there in the morning. I had on a windbreaker, a scarf, and a heavy sweatshirt...and I was still a little cold.

As the sky got light Rosamaria and I headed into town for breakfast. We definitely needed coffee!

This week's sketch model at the SBAA Portrait Group was Mary.

She was a great model!

When I was out the other day painting the forsythia (the day I met the photographer) I also did an ink was of a massive tree. I forgot to post it then. This is across a double page spread in my Stillman & Birn Beta Sketchbook.

Portraits - Ann & Carmine

Last Tuesday I got to paint portraits twice. In the morning I painted with the South Bay Art Association portrait group. Ann was our model.

Then in the evening the Wet Paints Studio Group has their sketch night. Carmine who is one of the members of the group graciously sat for us since we hadn't found a model.

Bellport Arts

My friend LuAnn Thompson owns Bellport Arts in Bellport. The shop does framing and matting and sells some artwork and assorted merchandise. She also does art exhibitions from time to time.

The shop is right next door to the Phoenix Gallery where I sat in September while our SBAA members show was going on. I had painted the view out the window of the streetlight with flowers and the store across the street. When LuAnn saw the painting she said nobody ever sketches her shop, so I knew I had to give it a try. I went there last week right before Halloween and all the trees in the town were decorated with unusual scarecrows. I sat in my car to get enough distance to see the shop and the scarecrow in front of it. I had this finished but didn't want to post this until I showed it to LuAnn which I did today. She just loved it!!! She noticed all the details I had put in...the two signs over the door, and the painting in the window. It was a big hit!

Yesterday morning I met with the SBAA Portrait Group for our weekly session.

Diana was our model.

Lynn

My original blog http://watercolorsbyjoan.blogspot.com has been giving me problems. I have not been able to upload anything to it, so I have started a new blog. I hope all my friends will continue to visit.

This portrait was done at the Tuesday SBAA live model meeting. This is Lynn, a fellow artist, who agreed to pose for us because we didn't have a model. I think I captured her perfectly!!! I am really happy with the way it came out. This is 5 x 7.
