Swing on the Side

Last Sunday I rode out to the Peconic Herb Farm out in Calverton. I like the small buildings on the property. I sketched the Tool Shed from the other side and the swing was visible this way. There were several people that sat there while I was sketching.

Peconic Herb Farm

I love going to the Peconic Herb Farm to paint/sketch. They sell flowers, plants, trees, urns, pottery, and all kinds of fun stuff. Everywhere you look is a possible painting. This display was on the patio in front of one of the barns.

Direct Watercolor #21

Painting #21 for the 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor Challenge was done at the Peconic Herb Farm in Peconic. I liked that I could see a reflection of the hanging baskets in the window panes.

Garden Shop at the Peconic Herb Farm & Direct Watercolor #6

This is a view at the Peconic Herb Farm that I've been wanting to paint for a while, but always convinced myself it was too detailed. I had already finished my painting for the 30 x 30 Challenge and decided to do this. Just doing it in watercolor wasn't an option due to all the text. I drew this directly in ink...no pencil lines. I'm happy with the way it came out.

For my 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor #6 I painted at Helen's Greenhouses in Aquebogue. I liked the arrangements of flowers in front of the greenhouses as well as the tubs of what looked like kale and leafy green veggies in front.

Direct Watercolor #4 & 5

The 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor Challenge is keeping me busy.

#4 was painted at the Peconic Herb Farm one of my favorite places to go and paint. They have quite a few sheds on the property and they always have plants, and trellises, and signs attractively displayed in front of them...and they are very welcoming to artists.

#5 is a house in Sayville with a stone wall and flowers in front of it. I like painting spots like this and can do them from my car so I am not sitting in the street and so obvious to all the neighbors.

House at Peconic Herb Farm

My plein air group met at the Peconic Herb Farm. Rather than focusing on the many plants and all the foliage I was distracted by this side of the house.

30 x 30 Direct Watercolor - Day 16

My plein air group met at the Peconic Herb Farm in Calverton on Tuesday morning. I usually focus on flowers there but was attracted to this cabin on the property. Here is my Day 16 painting...no pencil lines.

Here's a little extra digital painting I did recently using ArtRage.

Inktober Day 2 at the Peconic Herb Farm

Yesterday my plein air group, PALS, met at the Peconic Herb Farm to paint. I did a view of one of the flower arrangements outside one of the greenhouses. It isn't quite finished yet, but it is close.
I was happy we were there because for a long time I have wanted to sketch/paint this window filled with glass bottles that is inside one of the small buildings. I used my Elegant Writer Pen to sketch this for Inktober Day 2.

Beachy Display

On Tuesday my plein air group was supposed to paint a windmill house out east, however due to repaving of local streets it was impossible to get there. So we went to the Peconic Herb Garden in Calverton instead which was nearby. They have a lot of outdoor displays but this indoor one caught my eye. It was set up in the end of a greenhouse, but it was much too hot inside to stay there. I was able to see this much while I was sitting outside the building looking through the doorway to the inside. All kinds of interesting objects were in view.

Peconic Herb Farm

On Tuesday my plein air group had our first outing of the season at the Peconic Herb Farm. I could paint there for hours. They have such wonderful displays. I was attracted to this bike surrounded by flowers but I think it is too busy with all the foliage and the bike doesn't stand out enough. I think I needed to use more artistic license in this one.

New Flower ATCs

Here are a few new flower ATCs that I've done for the exchange my art group is doing. These were done when I was at the Peconic Herb Farm after I did the yupo painting.

Flowers on Yupo

Every once in a while my mind goes crazy and I do something unexpected. I went to the Peconic Herb Farm last week all set to do a regular watercolor. When I pulled out the board I was going to work on I found a piece of yupo paper on the other side. It had been there for months...so I decided to use it. I've never tried it en plein air but I know my friend, Julie Ford Oliver, (http://juliefordoliver.blogspot.com)  in addition to doing beautiful oils does paintings on yupo paper...sometimes while riding as a passenger in a car. My feeling that morning was if she can paint on it in the car, I can paint on it outdoors. lol Of course I should have prepped the paper and cleaned it with alcohol, but I knew I didn't have any so it was now or never.

Here is the completed painting...or as finished as it is right now. I may touch it up a little more.

I did have the presence of mind to take a few photos while I was painting, so here they are.

This is the view I was painting.

It worked better than I expected so I may give it another try. I've painted on yupo before but it has been a long time. :)

At the Herb Farm

This was done at the Peconic Herb Farm before I left for my quick trip to my nephew's wedding in California. I will post the sketches I did there shortly.

Along the Wall

This was also done last week at the herb farm. I love their collection of pots and plants and buildings. This is the first sketch that I did for the new Sketchbook Project. I glued in watercolor paper to the pages in the book I received, so I can work on both sides. I will try to do more double page spreads like this one.

Sage

I went back to the Peconic River Herb Farm to paint again. I decided I should do at least a pair of herb paintings, if not an actual series. This is the second one I did of their herb display....maybe I'll get a chance to do more.

At the Herb Farm

The Peconic Herb Farm is such a great place to paint. You can do something small like this one that I did in my journal.

Or something larger like this greenhouse which is 5 x 7.
