Patriotic on West Ave

 I spotted this house at 35 West Ave in West Sayville. They were proudly displaying the colors with the large American flag and the red, white, and blue bunting.

Bellport Street Scene

Yes, this is a similar view to yesterday's post. It was painted along Bellport Lane looking toward South Country Road. I am participating in the South Bay Art Association's Plein Air Event again this year. The artwork will be on display on Bellport Day on July 25. The participants have about a week and a half to paint in the designated area and select one piece to enter into our exhibit. I the show is juried and prizes are awarded to the winners. So far I've painted 2 possible entries but I'm fairly sure this is the one I will put in the show. 

Red, White, and Blue

 I've sketched this house in Bellport several times in the past. It is positioned well and this day the shadow on the fence looked so nice.

Bellport House with Flag

Many of the homes here fly the American flag but especially around the 4th of July. This house in Bellport was so enticing with the strong shadow on the white building and the American flag so prominent. Now that I think of it the buildings in Bellport's Historic Village itself are white. I don't remember seeing any that are another color. The doors however do stand out!

West Sayville House with Flag

Down my the Maritime Museum in West Sayville there is a street with some cute houses. They are fun to sketch in the winter when it is snowy and right now, especially when the flags are out for the 4th of July.

I love that there are so many houses around here that fly the American flag like this one in Sayville.

 

House at Peconic Herb Farm

My plein air group met at the Peconic Herb Farm. Rather than focusing on the many plants and all the foliage I was distracted by this side of the house.

 

Main Road, Laurel

This is the next page in my concertina sketchbook that is focusing on the main road that runs through the North Fork of Long Island (Route 25). I had planned to go a little farther east today, but there must have been an accident because I reached a certain point and the traffic was at a standstill. After sitting in the same place for about 10 minutes I just turned around. This little barn was tucked in off Main Street in Laurel.

30 x 30 Direct Watercolor - Day 14 and Ink Sketches

Today in the USA we are celebrating Flag Day, so I couldn't think of anything better than finding a scene with an American flag. This was down by one of the marinas.

Yesterday in addition to sketching at the Metropolitan Museum I did a few ink sketches. This one was done at the Variety coffee shop a few blocks from the museum. We were a bit early and since it was raining we ducked into this spot rather than stand out in the rain.

On the trip home we got to Penn Station about 40 minutes before our train so we sat down in the waiting room. I was tired but finally decided to sketch and pulled out my materials. I got so involved in the sketch that Susan had to nudge me and let me know that our train was boarding...so this time I had to leave before the sketch was finished. lol

Gas Station and People

On Sunday when I was driving around I found this cute old gas station that was somewhere between Hampton Bays and East Quogue. I loved the old pump and the flag on the building.

This was done mostly with watercolors and ink and then a little watercolor pencil on the trees.

These two sketches were from Saturday. I usually do a full sketch when I take the train from all the way out by me, but because I was going to Brooklyn Terminal the connections were better if I left from Hicksville. That means the ride to Jamaica Station was short. I did this directly in ink which I find hard to do on the LIRR. For some reason there is a vibration that I feel and it makes the ink lines very raggedy. This lady was sitting so that one of the seats partially blocked her so the sketch isn't quite complete, but it resembles her a lot.

Coming home I had a short wait in Jamaica where I was switching trains so I sketched one of the commuters that was standing nearby. This was done directly in ink.
