Maine Visit - Day 2

 We lucked out with our trip to Maine and had really nice weather. On our second day we headed down to the Boothbay area. We wanted to see how the storm had affected that area, and I wanted to sketch. Michelle was more interested in going into the few shops that were open. We were a few days early for the start of the season. That meant no crowds and free parking.

We drove out to Ocean Point. Almost the entire road down along the point had to be completely replaced after the winter storms, and they are almost finished. There was a section that had beautiful pine trees, but all of them were knocked down by the waves.

There is a foot bridge that crosses the Boothbay Harbor which had been repaired recently, so we headed out there to sketch. There were benches which was nice, but the top railing ended up being right in our line of sight. It was foggy and what we were sketching kept disappearing. lol

Chris and Michelle went to go into a few stores and I sat outside what is one of my favorite stores there. They have nice t-shirts. Usually it is a difficult spot to sketch because of the cars and trucks coming through, but it was quiet when we were there. I did go into the store when I finished, but I didn't buy anything.

Just in case you were wondering about our meals up there we made sure to fit in the required fried scallops and clams.

30 x 30 Direct Watercolor & More

Today is the final day of my direct watercolor challenge. I headed down to Boothbay Harbor to do my last painting of the lobster traps and buoys at the lobster wharf there. It started to drizzle so I painted from the car.

Next I headed for lunch at the lobster place next door. I ordered and there was a big clap of thunder followed by more thunder. I grabbed my food and like everyone else fled inside. It poured for about 15 minutes and I left when it stopped. I drove over to Ocean Point and parked along the water to paint. It was still drizzling but I was able to see to paint. It is really a pretty spot.

I noticed some big, black clouds behind me and it stormed again. I stayed put until the storm passed and then headed home.

Inktober - Day 6 - Ocean Point and Pumpkinfest

I decided to head down to Boothbay this morning and drove out to Ocean Point. It was drizzling by the time I got there so I had to sketch from my mobile studio. This was done with a twig and Chinese ink. #inktober #inktober2017

This weekend Damariscotta is having their annual Pumpkinfest. I've been here for this event in the past and it is a lot of fun. This morning I went out for my walk and the huge pumpkins were all on their bases waiting for the artists to decorate them. Just a few of them had started to work but one woman had and I stopped to talk to her. This afternoon I stopped in town to see her progress and sat and sketched her at work. The rain had washed some of her design off before it dried so she had to redo part of it. Her pumpkin has a haunted house on top made out of popsicle sticks and the pumpkin has white skeletons with a black design around them. The artist is Crystal McLain and she has done this for the past 5 or 6 years.

Trip to Maine - Day 2

On Friday my sister picks up her farm share veggies in a pretty scenic spot. I went with her in the morning and did a quick painting of the view directly in watercolors. Up here there is usually some river, pond, lake, or ocean in each view.

Our next plan for the day was swimming at the Mills, which I believe is a part of Damariscotta Lake. We went early because parking isn't easy there since it is in the middle of a residential area. The plan was to swim and then sketch/paint, but it was so windy that we were freezing when we finally got out of the water. So we wrapped ourselves in towels and jumped in the car instead to head home.

After lunch we headed to Ocean Point in Boothbay. There is a great road right along the shore and you can park and climb out on the rocks. Chris isn't that mobile yet after having both hips replaced so  she sat along the road and I climbed down and sat in my chair on a flat rock to paint this view.

Travels in Maine - Part III

Today was not only cold but windy and cloudy, so nobody wanted to do any sketching outside today.

We did take a drive down to Ocean Point in Boothbay Harbor. It is a beautiful spot with views

of the rocks, the water, the cottages, and a sailboat or two. I didn't get out of the car to take any photos and we did all our sketching/painting from the warm car. I parked in two different locations.

The good thing about painting in Maine is there are so many good views of the water.

This was done while sitting on Pemaquid Beach.

We took a ride over to Ocean Point near Boothbay Harbor. This is a great spot for rocks and water. Of course I didn't follow my gut and do the little red and white boat first. The owners came and took it while I was painting it! I told them they weren't allowed to remove the model but they just took it.
