30 in 30 - Day 22 - Rudy & the Women's March in NYC

For Day 22 of the "30 Paintings in 30 Days" Challenge I did a painting of Rudy, who is the service dog for the sister of my friend, Laurie Boroff in CA. I loved the close crop of Rudy and it was fun to capture him in watercolors, watercolor pencils, and a bit of oil pastel.

Here is the link to see some of the wonderful paintings posted by the other artists today:https://www.saetastudio.com/30-in-30-blog

On a more serious note. Yesterday I participated in the Women's March in NYC. What a day it was! I am not much of a political person, but I am concerned about where our new president and his cabinet are heading, so I went into the city to march. I was so honored and proud to be walking with so many others and showing my support for such important issues. There were people of all races, religions, ethnic groups, women, men, and even families with little kids. I loved that so many parents brought along their children to show them that people need to speak out and stand up for what they believe in. Everyone was so peaceful, friendly, cooperative, and supportive of everyone there. The NYC police did a wonderful job of keeping all of us safe. It was heartwarming to come home and see photos of all the marches that took place around our country and the world.

It was so crowded in the city that it was almost impossible to sketch anything...but you know me. I was there with 3 friends and one of them was also a sketcher, so before we started to march we stood and sketched for a few minutes.

Me with my protest sign.

Crowds with people of all kinds.

Our group of 4 after the march.

  1. Excellent sketch on a very busy day. Too many people in one place scares me...so I'd rather stay home..lol

  2. Love your painting of Rudy, Joan! Good for you - getting out to march for our rights. It's a scary time and we need things like this - probably more than ever! I didn't realize you lived so close! You should come down for a workshop! I still have 3 spots left in my Feb. 5th Valentines Party WS and I even have 2 women coming down from Queens for this one!I would love to meet you in person!! Thanks again for marching for us yesterday!

  3. Well you are the early girl today with Rudy. He jumped right off the page at me and made me smile. Thank you for sharing the pictures of the marching, they certainly capture the feelings of the moment. One thing about "The Donald" he has certainly gotten people moving, thinking and feeling again.

  4. Hilda, thanks. It was a great, supportive crowd.

anks. I'm not in the city...about 1hr 20 min by train east of Manhattan....not quite that close. Thanks so much.

Nelvia, I had Rudy done early because I new I wouldn't have time to paint anything yesterday. Yes, "The Donald" has definitely gotten people thinking and expressing their opinions. In some ways that is a good thing. Hopefully none of us will be ignored.

    1. Thanks, Val. I'm not so sure Trump cares what the rest of us think...that's the problem.

  8. What a wonderful painting of Rudy. I adore those eyes and I am really impressed with the way you painted his nose...it really comes forward. Neat to have the experience of participation in the march.
PS - How was the toilet situation? I had a friend who went 5 solid hours without finding one.

    1. Julie, thanks so much. We had no problem with the toilets. We used the restrooms when we got off the train and later in the shop that we went to for lunch. Plus I didn't drink anything all day just in case. lol

    1. I loved marching and seeing posts on FB from people I knew walking in other cities. My sister walked in Maine, 2 nieces in DC, a friend in Raleigh, NC, a friend in Memphis, and you and Kate out there. Solidarity and community!!!
