The Grange on Toned Paper

I tend to do a lot of sketches at The Grange because it is so close to home and is a great spot with this driveway. I grabbed my Strathmore toned tan sketchbook when I was heading out because I know that while gouache works so well on the toned paper. I've sketched this driveway twice this winter and the view each way makes me happy. 

Here is the painting and my supplies balanced on my lap while sitting in my mobile studio.

Snow by the Fence

 I had mail to take to the post office the other day, so after I dropped it off I sat in the post office parking lot in Holbrook to paint this snowy view. The snow has lasted longer than I expected. This was done in my Strathmore Toned Beige Sketchbook. White gouache was added for the snow.

Snow on Fallen Tree

We had a bit of snow recently and I went out to sketch it before it melted and disappeared. This was done in my Strathmore Beige Toned Sketchbook with watercolors and white gouache. 

Snow!!!

I'm usually a few days behind in my posting, but I'm going to go out of order and post today's work. We had snow that started last night. It looked beautiful last night because the snow was sticking to everything.

Supposedly we had about 2 inches of snow in this area, but this morning it was already compressed because it had started to drizzle lightly. 

By 7:30 this morning I had the blinds open and I was sitting by the living room window painting. I knew that if I waited until I went out later most of the snow would be off the trees and the bushes. So I squeezed myself between the side of my end table and the arm of the couch and painted the view out the living room window. This was done in my Strathmore Toned Tan Sketchbook with watercolors and some white gouache.

I did go out around 11:00 and sketched by the woods down the street. The snow on most of the trees was gone by that time, but there was still snow on the ground. It was drizzling but I had a view out the side window of my mobile studio.

Now that I'm done with my sketches of the storm I hope the rain finished washing the snow and slush away and that it is warm enough overnight that nothing freezes.

 

Floral Bouquet

While I was at Pat's garden (see previous post) I collected some of her flowers and dried Queen Anne's Lace. They were simple blooms but I thought they made a pretty arrangement. The black-eyed Susans were a little dry but they added a nice pop of yellow. This was done on a grey page in my Stillman & Birn Nova Trio that I received from some special friends (you know who you are). It was done in mostly watercolor but the white is gouache.

 

Sayville Snow

 I haven't been posting all my sketches in the order I did them. Sometimes I sneak something else in as soon as it is done. After the snow I've tried doing as many sketches of it as I can...at least before there is nothing left to make a good subject. The snow from this last storm has been very cooperative and has stayed put on a lot of the bushes. I think that was because it froze and that is keeping it from melting. This was sketched in front of one of the houses in Sayville, on Strathmore tan toned paper with watercolors and white gouache.
