Beth's Marathon

If you have followed my blog you probably saw the sketch I did at the NYC Marathon back at the beginning of November. My niece ran the marathon and a whole slew of family and friends went in to watch. I brought along my sketchbook and did a rough sketch on site.

Then I worked on the sketch at home using photos I took to refine the runners and make one look like Beth in action.

I planned to finish this as a Christmas gift for Beth, and procrastinator that I am I waited until this week to do any more work on this. lol I made sure I included some of the names of the businesses on 1st Ave and 92nd St because that is where she lives. The figures in the foreground are members of the family and friends that were in the city that day. I did make one of them (to the right of the opening in the crowd watching) look a bit like Beth's mom before I started painting. Here is the final painting.
I will surprise her with this on Christmas Day.

I tried to give her a little more color than the other runners, and she is the only runner with a face.
Hopefully that makes her figure stand out a bit.

Emie, I thought that I should show the process. Some people saw the original sketch when I did it in November. Thanks so much!

  7. This one made me smile, because I can picture you all bundled up, standing in a crowd, trying to sketch multiple moving people while freezing yourself. I'll bet Beth will love it. Does she know that you sketched this?
