Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge

One of the items for the Creative Spark scavenger hunt recently was a landscape. I headed over to the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley and sketched some of the woods there.

Inktober Day 14 - Smith Point Bridge

I headed over to Smith Point Beach in Shirley and sketched the grasses and shrubs along the bayside looking toward the Smith Point Bridge. I am still playing with my twig and Chinese ink.

Back to the Beach

My hip surgery sort of kept me away from the ocean beaches all summer,  If I went to the beach it was somewhere that I wouldn't have to worry about walking through sand to get where I was going, like the local bay beaches. The other day I decided to head over to the ocean at Smith Point Beach in Shirley. Due to the rough water and the high tide the water was nearly up to the dunes, so I stayed up by the pavilion which is nearly even with the top of the dunes. I sat in my chair and painted the view in a small Strathmore Visual Watercolor Journal that is 3.5 x 5 inches.

Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge

I wandered over to Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley the other day still looking for snowy scenes. The golden grasses and trees that still had some leaves gave this a little contrast.

Nature Walk

The other day I headed over to the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley. I wanted someplace where I could sit in my car and see something. With the leaves off the trees it was possible to see a little of the Carmans River in this painting. Yes, some walkers actually came by so I sketched them quickly before they disappeared behind the trees. This is 5  x7.

The Bridge

Before going to the beach yesterday for most of the day, I went to the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley to do a little sketching. I like this view of the bridge and the kayakers provided a bit of color under the arch. This is 5 x 7.

On Saturday I needed to get out and do a plein air, but it is still much too cold to sit outside. My handy car/studio worked well for this one. I sat along Montauk Highway near Shirley to paint this.

The Bridge

On Sunday I went to the WertheimNational Wildlife Refuge in Shirley. They redid the visitor's center and moved the entrance since I was there last. I was hoping I could find the trail that would take me to this view which you could see as you entered the refuge from the old entrance. It wasn't in a convenient spot where you could sit and paint it before, but now the road isn't used by the public so it was safe to sit on the little bridge and paint this view from it. This is 5 x 7.
