At the Library & Flo's

The Patchogue Sketch Club met recently at the library. Our theme was abstract which didn't tempt me in the least. Instead I sketched a family that was at a table nearby playing cards. I was amazed that they stayed as long as they did.

I was in Blue Point and stopped to sketch Flo's, which I've sketched many times. It hadn't opened for the season yet, but there was a big sign in front advertising opening day which I think was April 12th. Since I've sketched it so many time it was odd to do it while it was closed with no people around. I was able to include their sign at the end of this side of the building. I missed the season opening too.

Flo's Famous Luncheonette

I haven't visited Flo's in Blue Point since last year. I stopped by last week on a drizzly day and did this direct watercolor from my mobile studio. Flo's wasn't open, but for some strange reason the umbrellas were up and open. Maybe they were hoping the rain would stop and customers would come by.

Flo's of Blue Point

Every year the Patchogue Sketch Club makes a sketch visit to Flo's in Blue Point. Due to Covid restrictions there aren't as many picnic tables set up, but the other night the tilted, striped umbrellas caught my eye. There were a number of dogs there with their owners so I captured one of them too.

Flo's Summer 2020

I have sketched Flo's many, many times in the past. This is the first time I've sketched in this summer.  It is a beach snack shack up the street from Corey Beach in Bayport.  It serves hot dogs, burgers, fried clams, etc.  Usually there are lots of umbrellas and picnic tables, but due to the restrictions from Covid 19 there are just a few tables so people can be socially distant. I sat across the street to sketch this so that I could fit the building as well as some of the customers since they are so important to the scene.

Flo's

Tonight the Patchogue Sketch Club met at Flo's in Bluepoint. We've sketched there many times before and it is always fun. I usually focus on the building but this time I picked a table. Some of the people I included were sitting at the table but left over time, so new people were added. I loved sketching the two little kids...but they moved a lot.

My friend, Pat took a photo of me sketching along the street.

Flo's in Blue Point

Tonight the Patchogue Sketch Club had our beginning of the summer sketch night at Flo's Luncheonette in Blue Point. Flo's has become so popular they have a second permanent location in Patchogue. This one in Blue Point is seasonal and I'm sure we will return for our end of the season sketch of it. This year they spiffed things up and got new navy blue umbrellas instead of the yellow ones. From an artistic standpoint I liked the yellow ones better. It livened up the scene more.

Corey Beach

On Wednesday our sketch group was scheduled for a last trip to Flo's in Blue Point. Unfortunately for us Flo's wasn't open during the week. So we headed down the street to Corey Beach. I sat at a picnic table to get this view.

Alive After Five - July 6

The town of Patchogue had an even the other night called "Alive After Five." The main streets are shut down and there is food, drinks and entertainment everywhere. It gets super crowded and as the night progresses...too crowded. The Patchogue Sketch Club used this even for our sketch location on Thursday. I met up with a friend and we found out that another sketcher and her husband were at a table in one of the restaurants that open onto Main Street. So we met them and the 3 of us started the night sketching from there. The view was a bit blocked but you could see enough to sketch even if you had to combine body parts to make one person. Of course I did just a few of the hundreds of people that were standing in front of Gallo, the restaurant we were in. It was nice to sip on a beer and sketch out of the crowd for a while.

When we were all done with one sketch we vacated our table to give other patrons a chance to sit and eat. Gina, Cindy and I wandered down South Ocean Ave where we saw a few food trucks. It wasn't quite as crowded here and we found a place to sit where our backs were to a storefront and we were out of the way of the people walking by. I sketched Flo's food truck. I've sketched their outdoor stand in Bluepoint many times, but this was the first time I sketched the truck. Again I did only a few of the many people standing and waiting.

My sketch group met at Flo's in Blue Point on Wednesday night. It is a fun place to sketch...very colorful and there are always people around.

Near the Beach

Last Wednesday my evening sketch group met at Flo's in Blue Point. It is a funky clam bar where we like to sketch. I did this one from across the street. It was a cold evening. I had on long pants, a turtleneck shirt, a sweatshirt, another heavy sweatshirt, a scarf, and my fingerless gloves...and I was cold.

I recently watched a video by Karlyn Holman where she shows you how to use an Elegant Writer pen, which gives wonderful washy bleeds. It is fun to do, but working small I wasn't able to save areas of white which she recommends. The ink still gives a nice washy look.

Flo's Luncheonette

My sketch club planned on meeting at Flo's in Blue Point on Wednesday. For some reason I ended up being the only one who showed up. I've painted Flo's several times in watercolors, so I decided to do it in ink washes this time.

Return to Flo's

On Wednesday the Patchogue Sketch Club met at Flo's in Rocky Point. Flo's is a burger/clam shack that does a brisk business at this time of year. The colorful umbrellas make a colorful painting.
I resisted the food until it was time to head home, when I took some fried clams home for dinner.
