Heading to the City

I was in Sayville the other morning heading to the Farm on Lakeland. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a crowd of people on the platform of the Sayville Long Island Railroad station. I immediately pulled into the parking lot and looked for a space with a view so I could capture all the people heading back into NYC after spending their time on Fire Island. My timing was great. I had just about finished the people when the train heading West to the city rolled in. Then I concentrated on everything else in the sketch.

Fire Island Clipper

I've sketched the view in Sayville of the ferry terminals many times. It is always fun to capture this scene. I finished just in time. While I was packing up my supplies they started boarding the ferry.

Ending at the Bay

This was sketched in Sayville heading south on River Road by the Fire Island Ferries. I like sketching there at this time of year because you can actually park there. In season you can only park in the paid parking lots.

Waterfront & 1-2-3 Cats

I sat across from the ferries to Fire Island down by Brown's River Road and sketched.

I did another Sketchbook Revival lesson, this one with Este' Mac Leod. She had us doing 1-2-3 Let's Draw Cats. They must be the most popular animal...at least in these lessons. Each cat was drawn incorporating a number from 1-9 in the design. #3 and #8 had to be on their side. It was fun to try to figure out how to get the number in the design for the cat's face. Can you find the number in each face?

Beer and Cocktails

I went out to sketch the other day only to have it start raining. I ended up in the parking area for one of the  Fire Island ferries in Patchogue. The beer & cocktail shed was closed for the season but I though it was cute anyway. Once it opens up for the season I don't think I'm allowed to park in the lot since I'm not a resident and I'm not taking the ferry.

This is what the scene looked like by the time I finished sketching. lol

PGSB Part 4

My location yesterday morning for Paint the Great South Bay was the Fire Island Ferry in Sayville. There was a fair amount of activity but people kept moving around. I sketched the people first knowing it wouldn't be long before they would board the ferry and be gone. I knew the buildings weren't going anywhere.

Here's what it looked like after my models left.

New people started to arrive for the next scheduled ferry as I kept on painting.

Here is the finished painting.

Then last evening the artists were invited to paint from the rooftop of the Village Walk, a new assisted living facility that opened in Patchogue. They provided dinner for us too. It was nice on the rooftop but there wasn't a lot of room and there were limited views. We all had fun.

Painting as the sun went down.

I haven't finished the painting yet...stay tuned.

Even the moon came out to greet us last night.

Inktober Day 20 - Sayville Ferry Terminals & New Tiles

Today I sketched along River Road in Sayville. One after another there are ferry terminals/ticket booths to the different areas on Fire Island. The entire length of the street has street signs that say "No Parking April 1 - Nov 1. Of course that forces you to pay to park your car in the huge lot that was to my right. I ignored that and sat in my mobile studio to sketch this view down the street. I wasn't parking...I was sketching! LOL

I recently did a few new alcohol ink tiles. I did use a different product to coat the tiles and protect them called Enviro Tex Lite Pour-On, High Gloss Finish. It really gives them a super glossy protective coating. It isn't too hard to use...just rather messy since you pour it over the tiles (which have to be raised up) so the finish coats the top and drips down and off the sides. Needless to say, your work area needs to be well covered. I'm happy with it!

Sayville Dock

This was painted last week on a rather overcast day down by the Fire Island Ferries. This is 4 x 6 and done in watercolors and ink.
