Then On To The Brooklyn Museum

After sketching the flowers that I posted yesterday, Susan and I went to meet the other NYC Urban Sketchers at the Brooklyn Museum. We spent most of the day in the African wing where there were great sculptures and artifacts to sketch. The museum didn't stop us from using ink or watercolors so my sketches are a combination of both.

My two sketches done before lunch:

Sketches done after lunch.

There was time for one more sketch before we were meeting to share our work...but no time to add color. (He looks like he's undergoing some kind of acupuncture.)

Then it was off to have drinks and share our work...more tomorrow.

  1. Expressive (scary!) sketches of the artifacts! And great that they allow watercolor -- that's unusual for most museums.

    1. Thanks, Tina. I think it depends on the guard and what museum you go to. We've never had problems at the Brooklyn Museum.

  2. African masks are very interesting to me. I envy your time there. Great sketches, Joan, but how civilized to all go for drinks and share...lucky you!

  3. Good golly, Joan! Your sketching life just leaves me in awe all of the time. I love each of these and am studying how you managed to convey so much texture in these pieces. I found myself wondering what was used in their original construction. Beautiful sketches and it sounds like you had an amazingly fun day!

    1. Sherry, it is interesting to look at the pieces and try to figure out how they were made and what materials were used. We try to make the most of the day when we go into the city since it is so far to go from here. Thanks so much!
