Beach Sketches

The other day I took a ride out to the Hamptons along the south shore of Long Island and went to Dune Road. From the parking lot of Ponquogue Beach I had a slightly raised view of the area. These were painted in my car. First I painted the dunes with a view going down Dune Road.

Then I turned the car around and faced the dunes. There were great shadows from all the dune fences.

I don't know if you've seen the drawing event/challenge that has been posted by Marc Taro Holmes and Liz Steele. It is called One Week 100 People, and the goal is to draw 100 people in one week, from March 6-10. They are doing only the weekdays, but Marc said people could use the whole week if needed. If you participate you can share your sketches on the social media of your choice using the hashtag #OneWeek100People2017.
I am hoping to participate and am thinking about the best places to go to find lots of people and figures. It means drawing about 20 people per day...not impossible, but not easy either. It will help to use a medium that is easy to work with and fast. Hopefully at the end of the week our people sketches will have improved immensely.

  3. Like these sketches as everything you included creates the mood. I am enjoying getting the New York experience in your sketches. I especially liked the dancing sketches, and man did you ever have to be quick to catch what you did. See, that right there would discourage me. I am going to check the challenge out, not do it, I don't think, but definitely would like to see what people do. I'll have your back and be shouting support your direction. Hmmmm, makes me wonder where I would go to see lots of people - maybe the library here?

    1. Thanks, Nelvia. I had fun sketching the dancers, but it was a bit frustrating. The challenge should be fun to try. I'm planning on doing simple sketches so maybe I will be able to do it. There are a lot of people doing it.

  5. These are super sketches Joan! I especially like the first one - it just grabbed me. Good luck with the 100 people thing - I think it would take me all day to do one person let alone 20 - wow!!!

    1. Thanks, Val. I read someone's blog yesterday and she will be doing it also. She plans on doing the sketches directly in one color in watercolors...just simple lines. I can do quick sketches, but I'm going to need to be even quicker to get that many done, especially days when I have things already planned.
