Sketching in NYC Day 2

This is a continuation of my sketching time in NYC with my friend, Ai from Thailand.
(Day 1 was posted below this post.)
On Tueday I met Ai at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. We walked around the museum and sketched in one of the sculpture gardens that was filled with light.
Here is my sketch. I sketched using inktense wc pencils and added the water when I got home. The museum doesn't allow you to use ink or other wet materials.

Ai also sketched one of the statues.

Here is Ai sketching in the sculpture garden.

From there we went to the Guggenheim Museum. I sketched the ceiling and the ramps.

Next we headed down to lower Manhattan to the High Line Park It is a raised park built on a former elevated train line. Here is my sketch.

Here we are holding our sketches with the view behind us.

It was really fun showing Ai some of NYC and sketching with her.

Sketching in NYC

My friend, Ai, from Bangkok, Thailand was in the USA with her family visiting her in-laws for a few weeks in Alabama. Ai wanted to see NYC so she arranged to visit up here for a few days. Because of my art show I couldn't meet her over the weekend, but we did meet on Monday.

The forecast was for possible showers in the morning so we met at Grand Central Terminal.

We went downstairs near the food court and found a flower vendor to sketch.
Here is my sketch, followed by Ai's.

Here are our sketches with the actual view we had.

After lunch we decide to see if we could sketch outside. It was rather cold so we decided to do something quick. I sketched one of the 42nd St entrances to Grand Central. (You notice how we both picked such uncomplicated views. lol)
.

Ai sketched the roof.

Here we are with our sketches outside Grand Central Terminal.

By this time we knew we needed to sketch from indoors, so we headed over to the NY Public Library on 42nd Street and 5th Avenue. We found a nice spot with an indoor/outdoor view.
Here is my sketch.

Here is Ai's sketch.

It was such a fun day, that we decided to meet again the next day.

Wisteria & Show Photo

Please come visit my other blog at
http://themagicfeatherbyjoant.blogspot.com

Last week I headed to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Oakdale because I knew the wisteria had to be in bloom. Instead of painting a large section of the porch on the manor house, I focused a bit on the wisteria itself.

This past weekend I took part in the Art Mart sponsored by the Smithtown Historical Society. It was held in the historic Brush Barn in Smithtown. It was a fun show, even if sales were slow. This is the first time they held the show, so hopefully it will get more popular in the future. Here is a photo of me in front of my spot.

My frined Susan and I went to Richter's Orchard in Northport last week to paint. Trying to do a scene with all flowering trees was a challenge. This is about 4 x 10.

I found it a bit easier to do just one tree.

Union Square Market and Hoboken Train Station

Please come and check my other blog site. I have 3 new posts there.

On Saturday my sister and I went into Manhattan to see the American Watercolor Society Show, which was great! We took along our sketching materials so we could paint at Union Square Park which has a market on Saturdays. This is one of the flower stalls.

On the way home we had to take the train from Hoboken to her house. We had a bit of time so I sketched the ticket counter there.

Smithtown Lane

This is my "but my eyes were dialated" painting. I had a eye doctor's appointment on Thursday and he put those wonderful drops in my eyes that made them look like Little Orphan Annie's eyes. He told me I would need to wear sunglasses outside and would have trouble reading for a while. He didn't say I wouldn't be able to see what I was doing in my journal. I couldn't see the pencil lines or make the ink lines match the painted areas correctly. I did as much as I could and just left it as is.

I was parked on a dead end street to paint this next to a wooded lot. As I got started a man came over and tapped on my window asking if I needed help. I told him I was there to paint the view of the house and the forsythia. He lived in the house next to this one. Too bad I wasn't painting his house...maybe I would have had a customer. It is funny that in the many, many times I've sat in front of people's houses to paint, I think someone has come over 3 times to see what I was doing there.

I have started a new journal just for the month of April. It is a "fake journal" like the one I did about Anglina last April. You can visit that blog and see my postings by clicking on this link:
