Sayville Summerfest

On Saturday Sayville was having a Summerfest complete with vendors, food, games, a carnival, a petting zoo, and assorted entertainment. It was crowded so I couldn't sit and sketch in the middle of everything. I found a safe, quiet spot behind some food trucks where I had a view of a few things including the ferris wheel at the carnival. Luckily I had my Posca markers in my bag. They added nice brights to the cars on the ferris wheel.

Carnival View

Over Memorial Day weekend there was a carnival over in the parking lot at the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore. It wasn't a very nice day so there weren't too many people around when I stopped at the carnival early in the day. I ended up parking my "mobile studio" outside the fencing and just drawing what I saw in front of me. I sketched rides, games, amusements and all kinds of fun things.

The Carnival

I like when there is a carnival in town, but I rarely go when it is open. This one was held in a field near a golf course, and I went and sat outside the fence when there was nobody around. I moved some of the rides closer together so I could do a few of them in one scene. I am taking a workshop on using Posca acrylic markers in a few weeks, and I wanted to try them out. They seem like fun.

Carousel

At the end of last week I noticed that they were setting up for a carnival down at The Grange, a park that is about 5 minutes from me. The rides and booths seem to always look the same so I was looking for a different view.  I parked my car and the carousel was right in front of me. None of the booths were open and there were only a few workers there, so I sat and sketched. I was far enough away that I didn't have to worry about the horses being anatomically correct. lol That's always a good thing. I thought I would get back there while it was open over the weekend, but that didn't happen.

Carnival

This sketch is from a little over a month ago, but with the challenge in June it didn't get posted. I went to sketch the carnival in the parking lot of St Joseph's College in Patchogue. It wasn't yet open for the day, which gave me the opportunity of sitting in my car rather close to the rides. Showers were expected so I figured inside the mobile studio would be the best way to sketch. I watched the sky coming toward me from the direction of the ferris wheel get darker and darker. Then there was a boom of thunder and a deluge of rain. It was impossible to see out the window since it was raining so hard. That lasted about 10 minutes and then the rain stopped and I was able to finish the sketch.

Carnival Time

This is the time of year that the carnivals start popping up around the area. This one was down the street from me at the Islip Grange. I parked myself so I could have a good view of the ticket booth, but the whole time I was sketching I was sitting next to a food booth. All I could smell was burgers and fries.

Carnival

On Friday night I met my friend, Suzala to go to a carnival in Merrick. It was mostly rides and games, with a little food thrown in. We wanted to paint the scene at night and it was pretty dark by the time we finished. It was fun.

Patchogue Carnival

A week or so ago we had a carnival come to Patchogue. I swear the same rides are in every carnival so there isn't much difference between one and another that we have here. I started this with the slide and it sort of morphed into a sketch of all the rides. lol I couldn't stop myself. I did this from my car before the carnival opened for the day. I thought that was safer than sitting in the parking lot and being run over by someone who didn't notice me. lol

Carnival Sketches

We had a carnival in town over the weekend. Before it opened I stopped by, sat in my car, and sketched a few of the rides that I could see from my location. Of course the one with the umbrella seats had to be tested while I was sketching it. lol

Holbrook Carnival

This has been one busy weekend of sketching for me. Today the weather wasn't great...mostly overcast with light showers from time to time. I went out early in the day to an art show and visited with some friends doing the show before we walked around to see the art.

When I got home I debated if I should go to the pool and get some exercise between the showers, but decided it was too cool. So I grabbed my bag of sketching supplies and headed to the carnival here in Holbrook. It is run by All County Amusements who handle most of the carnivals in the area. I've sketched at their carnivals before.

First I stood near the kiddie caterpillar ride. Luckily the rides didn't last too long so I was able to sketch a bit more each time the ride stopped.

Next I sketched the umbrella ride. It isn't easy to sketch a moving ride, so I sketched the cars as they stopped to slowly unload. While I was sketching the owner of the carnival came over to see what I was doing. I gave him my art business card so he could see the sketches on my blog when they were finished. He said the purple car is his favorite...mine too.

I did the above two sketches standing up, but I found a bench to sit on to sketch the "win a
live goldfish" toss game.

This last sketch I did from the same bench looking over at one of the "food" stalls.
I got it sketched and painted about half way when it started to drizzle...not good for watercolors. lol
So I finished this one when I got home.
