Coney Island

One of the absolute treasures in Brooklyn is Coney Island. It is an incredible feast for the senses with the foods, amusements, the beach, noises, the colors, and people, people and more people. My friend, Susan has been there to sketch several times and each time I missed going. We trecked out there by train and met another friend for the day.

No trip to Coney Island is complete without a visit to Nathans which is known for their hot dogs, fried clams and fries. I skipped the hot dogs but the rest was yummy. I sketched this in the morning and by lunchtime there must have been a hundred people on lines in front of it...me included. lol

Look down the boardwalk in any direction and you can see some of the rides...none of which I would dare to go on. People are sitting and walking everywhere. Sometimes you see someone whose attire or look makes you just stop with your mouth hanging open...and you think to yourself "Did I just see what I thought I saw?" There are a lot of very normal people too.

After lunch we needed some shade so we went into the area with the rides and games. I just had to sketch the Wonder Wheel sign and everything behind it.

Our last stop of the day was at the Freak Bar. This is where a lot of the sideshow people hang out. It was pretty quiet except for the lady with the false spangly eyelashes, the fishnet stockings, short shorts, platform heels and the boa constrictor around her neck. She was very popular because everyone wanted to pose with her. I wish I had time to sketch her too.
