"30 Paintings in 30 Days" - Day 27 - Hollyhocks II

We are winding down in "30 Paintings in 30 Days"...just a few more days to go. "Hollyhocks II" was done from a reference photo I took at Old Westbury Gardens. This is 5 x 5 inches.

This was from the same visit that I painted this earlier in the challenge.

Last week at my portrait group, Seamus posed for us.

  1. The grid pattern behind your Hollyhocks makes a nice backdrop for the colors and shapes of the flowers. Beautiful work on your portrait. I love his hat and great texture on his beard.

  2. I agree with Celia - the grid adds a good contrast to the soft petals.
We are painting portraits at the guild this month so really admire the one of Seamus.

  3. Lovely composition Joan. I have always liked hollyhocks and hope to grow some this year - good job.

  4. Hollyhocks are one of my favorites. They don't grow well here, guess it is too hot. Love seeing them when we go to New Mexico. Beautiful here on your posts!

  5. Thanks, Celia! I had fun doing both.

Julie, thanks! I will never be a portrait painting but I find that doing them makes me observe more carefully.

    Val, thanks so much!

Jo, I'm surprised they don't go there. I do remember seeing then all over in New Mexico.
