Sketchcrawl #38 in NYC

Today was the World Wide Sketchcrawl #38. I went into Manhattan to meet up with the NYC Urban Sketchers. The plan was to sketch above and below the streets of NYC today.
I started the day with a sketch of my train ride from Long Island. It takes about 1hr 20 min to get from here to Penn Station, so I had plenty of time to sketch the people sitting across the aisle from me.

The group met at the corner of 42nd St. and Seventh Ave. across from the Port Authority Bus Station. That is what is directly ahead in my sketch but I got a bit of the view down Seventh Avenue too.

It was a bit cold out, so we headed inside the Port Authority Bus Station to sketch and warm up. Even though I've lived in NY for my whole life, this was the first time I was ever inside the building. I ended up sketching one of the escalators and some of the people standing around waiting

Next we headed back outside and walked up 42nd Street to the Times Square area. There are a lot of theaters, buildings, and assorted attractive billboards and things to sketch. Here were my choices.

Some of the sketchers had to leave at this point but the rest of us walked up to Grand Central Terminal to sketch. We sat at a table in the food court. I sketches a view through one of the arches and some of the people at the other tables.

At around 5 o'clock I left the group and headed back to Penn Station to catch a train back home. I had enough time before the train was leaving to do a sketch in the Long Island Railroad waiting area.

It was an exhausting but fun day!

  2. Wow! I can't believe how many sketches you've done in one day!! I too love them all and am reminded of Chicago's old train station with its shops, people, grand entry, etc. I have to say I love the signs/billboards best though. I'm tickled pink by the hand.

  3. Great sketches! I noticed that you didn't stay at the Port Authority building very long. Your people sketches are so good! Do they ever notice what you are doing and come over to look?

  5. Wow that is a ton of sketching for one day! I love them and it reminds me of my trip to New York! What fun! How many people showed up to sketch? I love plein air but find its a challenge to edit, in NY it would have been even harder! Great job!

  6. Your sketches are so incredible...to me it would be such a challenge alone sketching on the train...you always get those fine details that add to the sketch...beautifully done, Joan.

  8. Lin - Thanks. This group only sketches in one location for a short time and then moves It makes me sketch faster. lol Or I'd be left behind.

Sherry - Thanks. I enjoyed doing the billboards, but there are so many to choose from.

Mickey - Thanks. We were only inside the Port Authority for an hour tops. They don't stay put long

Tina - It was a lot of fun. I love seeing what everyone else sketches too. Thanks.

Desiree - Thank you. There were maybe about a dozen people when we started. Some of them didn't stay for the whole day.

Hilda - Thanks so much. The people on the train were so busy talking they didn't even seem to notice I was sketching them. lol

Carol - Thanks. I never had any desire to see Spriderman. We are going to see Cinderella at the end of the month. I hope to go in early and sketch something before dinner.
