Through the Dunes

For the last day of summer I drove over to the beach at Smith Point. I love seeing the ocean and waves peeking through the dunes.

Just Beachy

We've had some windy weather, but I've escaped to the beach on a few sunny days. This day at Smith Point Beach the waves were a bit rough and the water was up quite high. I stayed up by the pavillion and sat on a bench to enjoy the day.

Waves

With the hurricane building off the coast recently we got some interesting waves at the beach here. This was sketched at Smith Point Park.

Rough Water

The other day we had a storm with really strong winds. The rain stopped by the next day but the winds continued. Watching the bay and the waves breaking on the bulkhead down by Lands End in Sayville was entertaining. It wasn't a good day for sailing!

Waves

I went to the beach at Smith Point Beach on Wednesday...needed to see the water. It wasn't a real beach day. It was too windy. But the surf looked great.

Awaiting Florence

Over the weekend while Hurricane Florence was devastating parts of North and South Carolina, it affected our surf up here on Long Island. I thought the waves would be bigger but the undertow was really strong even if you were standing at the very edge. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the storm's path. This was sketched at Smith Point Beach.

Beach Waves

I can't go for very long without visiting the beach. I sat at Smith Point Beach last week and did a small watercolor sketch of the waves. The wind was really blowing which produced a lot of spray.

Then I pulled out my iPad and used ArtRage for this digital sketch.

Oceanfront at Ocean Beach

Yesterday two friends and I took the ferry from Bayshore to Ocean Beach on Fire Island. I've wanted to go there for a while, so I was happy. We walked up and down the streets in the town looking at the different styles of beach houses and cottages. We climbed the steps and the boardwalk going over the dunes. The water was really rough yesterday and no swimming was allowed. We sat on the boardwalk over the dunes and I sketched these two small pieces.

Here is a short video I made of the waves.
