White Roses

I spent a day with my sister, Mickey recently. We turned it into a bit of an art day and went up to The Gardens of Wycoff near her in New Jersey. We had painted in the rose garden once before and that was our destination. It seems we were a bit early and most of the rose bushes only had buds. The only exception seemed to be a few bushes with white roses.

30x30 Direct Watercolor #21 At the Arboretum

Recently I took a trip over to the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. I wanted to paint the roses on the trellises and wasn't sure if they were blooming yet. According to one of the horticultural specialists the aren't at their peak yet, but as you can see they are blooming. Hopefully I will get back there and do another painting. I love this spot because it reminds me of Monet's Garden when I painted there

When I finished the roses on the trellises I went into the walled garden. These flowers are Canterbury Bells. I used a bit of oil pastel on this in addition to the watercolors.

30 x 30 Direct Watercolor - Day 13

During the Bellport Garden Tour I had about 45 minutes to visit another garden when I finished the floral landscape in the first garden. I went over to the garden next door where my friend, Laurie Schlageter was already painting. There were some lovely bushes filled with flowers near the front of the garden, so I sat myself down and worked on a painting of some pink "knock 'em back" roses...which is what the ladies talking behind me were calling them. This is 5 x 7.

Flowers

My sister, Mickey came to stay over on Sunday so we could go to our aunt's wake and funeral together. It was not the best reason to get together but we're trying to make the most of it since we don't get together all that much any more. After catching up a bit we decided to do some painting. I still had my roses from Valentine's Day roses which are now dried roses. We thought they were interesting that way. They are yellow roses with these interesting deep rose edges to the petals.

Roses

On Tuesday my plein air group met at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. There were some lovely roses blooming there so a few of us focused on them. The first two roses are ATC sized (for my exchange) and the last one is 5 x 7.

30 Paintings in 30 Days - Day 7 - Pink Rose

My painting for Day 7 of the "30 Paintings in 30 Days" challenge is a pink rose. It was done from a photo I took in Manhattan Beach this past summer when I was there for a wedding. The painting is 5 x 5 inches. I don't know if I would be able to keep up if I did larger paintings...maybe I'll try next year. Right now this doesn't seem so daunting.

Here is another small painting I did before the year was over. This is a corner of a restaurant in Stony Brook with some of the Christmas decorations still around.
