West Sayville Dock

I haven't sketch at the West Sayville Dock recently, but when I stopped by I remembered how there is always something to sketch there.

Flooding After the Storm

The east coast had a lot of flooding from the heavy rain and high tides recently. We had no immediate problems where we are since we are far enough away from the water. I took a ride into Sayville near the West End Dock. Due to the high tide the water from the Great South Bay completely covered the dock area and partway up the street. I parked on the street outside the grounds of the Maritime Museum and sketched the view. People kept driving really close to the water and finally someone from the town came along with a sawhorse to put at the edge of the water to warn people (who should be smart enough to know not to drive into the water). But watching the reports from other areas people did drive into the floods and then got stuck or had serious problems with their cars.

This is one of my older sketches of pretty much the same area. The corner is where the boat is on the left in the new sketch above. I found out later that the entire grounds of the Maritime Museum were also under water. Some areas they said were the worst they've been since Hurricane Sandy.

West Sayville Dock

The West Sayville Dock is always an interesting place to sketch. There are a lot of nautical buildings and all kinds of boat in various conditions and states of repair. I can always find a subject there.

Inktober 2018 - Day 15

Today's Day 15 Inktober sketch was done at the West Sayville boat dock. There is a company right before you go out on the dock that does boat repairs and repainting. There are always one or two boats being worked on in addition to lots of scaffolding, pipes, ladders, etc that are fun to sketch.

30 in 30 - Day 29 - Louie

My Day 29 painting for the "30 Paintings in 30 Days" Challenge is of Louie. He belongs to my friend, Jean Ogden, and he resides with Annie who I painted a while ago for this challenge. Jean has lots of great pets.

Here is the link to the other paintings done for the challenge: https://www.saetastudio.com/30-in-30-blog

The boatyard by the West Sayville dock is such a great place to sketch and paint. There is always a large boat being worked on (usually one of the ferries for Fire Island).

Boar Repairs

It is always fun to go down to the West Sayville Boat Dock because there is always something going on. Today there were several people doing repairs/maintenance on big boats.
I picked Captain Al and the worker was busy sanding or drilling something. I could hear the noise but not quite see what was going on.
This was done in my Stillman & Birn Alpha Journal and is about 6 x 6.

Sunset #2

As I was finishing the sunset below I noticed that part of the sky had so much color, so I had to do a second painting. This one I had to do much faster because the color was changing fast and it was starting to get dark. It isn't easy getting the rich colors of the sunset when the sky is already wet, but I persisted. I just couldn't pass this up. This one is about 5 x 5.

The other day I headed down to the dock in West Sayville to sketch. This was an area that was flooded during Hurricane Sandy and parts of it were ruined. They seem to be working on replacing some of the pilings and boards. This is about 4 x 5.
