Inktober Day 14 - Hidden Buildings

When my FIL was alive he loved going to this restaurant called the 56th Fighter Squadron at Republic Airport in Farmingdale. It was designed like a French Style Allied Headquarters Farmhouse and transported you back to the era of big band music and the military. My FIL was in the Air Force during WW II and really enjoyed the place. It closed back in 2013 and the buildings sit there in some disrepair hidden by foliage that has pretty much taken over. I was in the area today and took a drive to see if it was still standing. I guess eventually it will be knocked down but at the present time it is still standing (almost), so I used it for the location of my Inktober Day 14 sketch.

From the Past

I needed to go to Farmingdale the other day and decided to go over by Republic Airport to see if this building was still there. At one time it was a restaurant called the 56th Fighter Squadron and we had brunch there several times. It was decorated inside and out to resemble a building during WWII, and overlooked several historic planes at the airport. My father-in-law loved going there. Sadly it closed a few years ago. The building is still standing but is abandoned.

Honoring the Veterans

Happy Veterans Day!!!
Today in the United States we celebrate Veterans Day and honor all the men and women who have served in our military. My thanks to all of them as well as their families who have given so much to preserve our freedoms and way of life.

This morning I went to Sayville to sketch the ceremony they do there each year to honor the vetereans of our area. There were a few WWII vets who were present, but their numbers are dwindling each year.
It is a shame that more recognition isn't given to our veterans all the time.
