Plate Hibiscus

While walking around Old Westbury Gardens we went to a garden by the Thatched Cottage. There were these HUGE hibiscus flowers that I believe are called plate hibiscus. They were as big as my head. lol Of course all three of us sat down to paint them.

Old Westbury Gardens

Last week I went to Old Westbury Gardens with several artist friends. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the former home of John S. Phips and his family. The estate is surrounded by 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and laked. We started out at the formal walled garden which is spectacular.

"30 Paintings in 30 Days" - Day 27 - Hollyhocks II

We are winding down in "30 Paintings in 30 Days"...just a few more days to go. "Hollyhocks II" was done from a reference photo I took at Old Westbury Gardens. This is 5 x 5 inches.

This was from the same visit that I painted this earlier in the challenge.

Old Westbury Gardens

My friend and I recently painted at Old Westbury Gardens. We went to the Thatched Cottage first and I never left. The hollyhocks and other gorgeous flowers were just too much to resist.

I did this sketch directly in paint...just some of the random flowers in front of the house.

This one I focused on the wind with all the colors in front, especially those gorgeous hollyhocks.

View into the Garden

Last week I went with three friends for an art day heading west of here.

First we shopped for art supplies at the Dick Blick Store in Nassau County.

Then we headed over to Old Westbury Gardens to paint. We were lucky and got free passes for all of us through the library here.  There is a wonderful walled garden in the middle of the grounds.

I've painted inside of it before but this time I painted it from the outside looking in.

This is 8 x 10.

Sue and Dot were at the other end of the garden busy working by the waterlily pond.

The others weren't finished yet so I had time to do a very quick ATC of a waterlily.

Walled Garden

I did this painting of an area of the walled garden at Old Westbury Gardens the same day as I did the one below. This is 5 x 7.



Thatched Cottage Garden

Yesterday I went to Old Westbury Gardens to paint and sketch. There are some wonderful gardens there, but I had to find a place to sit that wasn't in direct sun. Luckily there was some shade by the Thatched Cottage. The garden there is great. This is 5 x 7.
