View from Smith Point Marina

It was a drizzly day but I wanted to get another sketch done for the sketchbook project. I sat in my mobile studio at the Smith Point Marina and painted the view looking toward the Smith Point Bridge.

30 x 30 Direct Watercolor - Day 11

I've been able to keep up with the 30 x 30 Direct Watercolor Challenge. Like usual I try to keep a few days ahead in case something comes up and I can't paint. My Day 11 painting was done at the Smith Point Marina looking over to Fire Island. You can see a tiny view of the Ranger's Station over on the left.

Smith Point Marina

I love the water views we have here on Long Island. This was painted at the Smith Point Marina, just on the mainland before the bridge to Smith Point Park.

#30x30Direct Watercolor2018 - Days 4, 5 & 6

I don't know what happened but I forgot to post for the last two days. Sorry! I'm not even away so I can't use that as an excuse. lol

Day 4 was done on the north fork of Long Island which is known for their wineries. I loved all the colors here like the yellow/orange wall, the purple bike, and the red bench.

Yesterday for day 5 I went to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. Their rhododendrons were in bloom. I looked for a cluster that was in sunlight. Their was a lot in bloom but due to our recent rain it was like a mud pit to get to most of the bushes. I opted to stay on the concrete path.

Today for day 6 I went to the Smith Point Marina to paint. There were some nice cloud formations.

Water and Skyscapes

I trust that everyone who was celebrating had a wonderful holiday weekend. I was lucky enough to spend one day with friends celebrating Passover and then spend a day with my husband's family yesterday to celebrate Easter.

I am still catching up on posting some previous work. One day we had showers, snowshowers, and  then just cloudy skies. I headed down to the Smith Point Marina and painted two views over the water. For each I faced in a slightly different direction.

This one below was painted looking across the bay to Fire Island.

Smith Point Marina Views I & II

These were done last week from the parking lot of the Smith Point Marina which is at the foot of the bridge that goes over to Smith Point Park on Fire Island. I was facing towards the mainland. It was so windy that day that I couldn't paint outdoors, I had to sit in the car.

This one has a bit of the parking lot in it.

Near Smith Point

On my visit down to Smith Point, which is part of Fire Island, I stopped at the Smith Point Marina. This is the view from there across to Smith Point Beach.

I sketched these rocks in the parking lot at the beach. It is on the bay side of the island. While I was sketching this 7 deer and a red fox came strolling along. They often feed on the grasses, especially now when there is so little traffic in the parking lot.

Day 14 of Floral Fantasy is posted. I included a few friends who are also doing fake journals in my sketches there yesterday and today.

Clouds Over the Bay

Last week when I was on the way over to the beach I decided that the cloudy sky looked so interesting that it was begging to be painted. So I pulled into the Smith Point Marina and went down by the water. This is 5 x 7.

Snowy Lot

Since the snow is still around I'm painting and sketching it as much as possible.
This was done in the parking lot of the Smith Haven Marina. The views of the water weren't too exciting, but I liked the disturbed snow in the parking lot. lol
This was done in my Stillman & Birn Alpha Sketchbook...in fact it is the last sketch in that book.

I have tried several of the Stillman and Birn sketchbooks. Michael Kalman was nice enough to send me samples of some of the books when they came out. Each of them is different. I think I like the Beta Series the best. It seems to work the best for the watercolors I do. The Alpha paper is thinner and when I do sky washes it doesn't handle it as well as the Beta. But both of them take ink so well! I will have to order another of the square sketchbooks. I really liked that size. I have sampled the bound and spirals and still can't decide which one I like best. The spiral makes it easy to put the other side of the paper out of the way...but the bound one gives you that possibility of maybe, just maybe, sketching across the double page spread. I am currently working in a bound Beta but haven't done a double page spread yet.
