30 Day Challenge - Day 3 - Mustard Seed Cafe

I am continuing Leslie Saeta's "30 Paintings in 30 Days" challenge. Day 3 was done in gouache on location across from the Mustard Seed Cafe in Center Moriches.  I sat in my "mobile studio" to paint.

  1. how do you like the gouche? I have some but must admit that they sit in the paint hangar and I really haven't worked much with them? Also forgot to ask what a mesa painting is - think that was how you spelled it.

    1. Masa is a kind of Japanese paper used for painting and printing. I've worked with it after it has been crumpled and then flattened down. You get an effect sort of like batique. I am slowly adjusting to the gouache. It is very different from watercolors.

  2. Joan this looks great. I have played around a bit with gouache but can't say I have been successful. Seems to me you have no trouble making it work well for you. Good luck with the 30 day challenge...will be stopping in to visit often and view your wonderful art. Hugs!

    1. Thanks, Debbie. I've watched some videos and have a friend who I would love to sit next to and watch her do gouache. I figure this will give me the opportunity to stop procrastinating and try it more than once. lol

    1. Thanks, Val. I think I use it more transparently than most gouache painters. I'll have to watch some more demos.

  4. Terrific job on perspective with this one, Joan.
I admire the way you use gouache. I use it thinly too. Maybe a bit thicker at the end if a place needs it.
