Inktober Day 21 - Dyckman Farmhouse in Ink and Color

Today's Inktober Day 21 sketch was done at Dyckman Farmhouse in the Inwood section of Manhattan. I was there with the NYC Urban Sketchers today for an unusual urban sketching day. The NYC Urban Sketchers spent the day sketching at the Dyckman Farmhouse, an old Dutch Farmhouse located on Broadway, while our counterparts in Indonesia were sketching on the Spice Island on Manhattan Street. The Treaty of Breda connected Manhattan Island, the Dutch, and the Spice Islands with the trade of nutmeg. The NYC Urban Sketchers are doing a sketch trade with our friends in Indonesia. We are sending them a bit of Manhattan while they are sending us a bit of the Spice Islands. I first sketched this view in ink.

I wanted to add color to the sketch because it was my contribution to the trade with the Indonesian sketchers. I hope whoever gets it in trade likes it.

Downtown Nashville 2

The signs along Broadway in Nashville are so great! I enjoyed sketching them.

Downtown Nashville

I wanted to capture a little of the excitement of Broadway in downtown Nashville. This is a little larger than most of my sketches. It is in a 9 x 12 sketchbook. I included a few of the hotspots.

City Sketching

My husband and I had tickets to a show on Broadway yesterday, and we went in early so I could sketch a bit before we had dinner. I started with a sketch of some people on the train. The motion of the train made me sketch in pencil and the trip is fairly short so I didn't bother with color. As you can see everyone is dressed for our NYC cold weather.

It was much too cold to sketch outdoors so I went into St. Patrick's Cathedral. Much of the cathedral is being renovated, but the altars were fine. This is the altar to Our Lady of Guadaloupe

I had a little more time so I did a sketch of the altar of St. John the Evangelist.

We saw the Broadway show "Once" which is about musicians in Ireland. The stage set is of an Irish pub. Before the show actually starts the musicians are on the stage jamming.

We took the subway back to Kew Gardens where we had parked the car. I got a seat going home so I was able to do two more sketches in my moleskin journal...again in pencil.
