Train Sketches

I took the Long Island Railroad into the city on Wednesday. This group of people was sitting across the aisle from me. It turns out that the two people on the left were part of a family visiting from Australia. The man on the right who was a friend, and the lady behind them was a stranger. They became aware that I was sketching them when the lady next to me sat down and started commenting on it. I showed it to them and they all took photos of it.

These men were across from where I was sitting on the trip home. The man on the left spoke in sign language so his hands kept moving. lol

Man Eating

The morning of my FIL's funeral we left home really early so we wouldn't get stuck in traffic and be late. Of course we got where we were going early, which gave us time to have breakfast at McDonald's. I had time to sketch the man seated at the table behind us.

Magnolia

Magnolia blossoms here this year have been very scarce. I saw these on the property of a local apartment complex and sat down there for a while.

Every Day in May

Day 5 - something seen at a park - the little kids were getting ready for their game.

A Special Day

Many of us follow blogs of other artists here on the internet that we have never met. Sometimes fate gives us a chance to meet one of them. Today was a special day. I have been following the blog of Wendy Barrett from Australia for quite a while, and she is on a trip to the USA and I met her in NYC today!!! She was so sweet and it was so much fun to spend time with her.
Here is a link to her blog: http://wendybarrettpainting.blogspot.com
I know some of you follow her blog too. We had such a good time together!!!

First we sketched in Times Square. Rain was forecast but we didn't let that dampen our enthusiasm for sketching and talking. Here we are in Times Square...where they saved a table in the pedestrian mall just for us. :)

A selfie of the two of us.

Wendy's work on the right and my work on the left.

Wendy (left) and me (right) working on our sketches.

Sketching was followed by a nice lunch and more talking. By the time we finished lunch it was raining. I had a pass to MOMA (the Museum of Modern Art) where there was a wonderful exhibit of Edgar Degas' monotypes. It was a huge exhibit. Here are a few pieces that I loved.

We also saw some of the other works like Van Gogh's "Starry Night" which Wendy is admiring in this photo.

Wendy will be in NYC for 2 weeks and she will be joining me and the NYC Urban Sketchers in Central Park on Saturday (weather permitting). After several weeks of lovely weather we have been having rain and chilly weather all week. I hope Saturday is nicer.
Wendy took a few other photos of the two of us. With her permission I will post them when she sends them to me.

Mc Sorley's Old Ale House

My second sketch last Saturday when I met the NYC Urban Sketchers was of Mc Sorley's Old Ale House. There were a lot of people out front at times. I just sketched a few. I think it is part of a bar tour so people would go in, come out, take photos, and move on to the next bar next door. Mark is sitting there on his stool sketching the same view.

I am participating in the Every Day in May challenge.  Anyone is welcome to join in. There is a Facebook group as well as a Flickr group where people post their sketches. Here are my sketches for May 1st & May 2nd.

If you are interested in participating here is the list. It is a lot of fun and there is no pressure. You can post on the Facebook page if you join or on the Flickr page.

Cooper Union

Last weekend I joined the NYC Urban Sketchers down near Cooper Union. When we got to the city it was drizzling so a few of us squashed ourselves under an overhang across from the building to sketch it. Those windows were a nightmare! lol
