St. John's

This is a small sketch that I did yesterday on a half page in my Stillman & Birn journal. This is St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holbrook.

Main Street, Stony Brook

I have this fascination with charming towns. Give me a Main Street and I'll check it out. This was done in my Stillman & Birn 7 in x 7 in journal.

Caution High Rollers

I did this from a smaller painting I had done en plein air in Maine back in December at Christmas Cove. I really liked this scene and will have to go back up there and do another view. This is 12 x 12.

Snowy Islip Grange

On Sunday after the snowstorm I headed over to the Islip Grange in Sayville to do a winter scene. This was done in my Stillman and Birn journal.

Sketchcrawl #34 at home

Yesterday was the 34th Worldwide Sketchcrawl. I had planned on going into Manhattan with my sketching friend, Susan to meet up with some other sketchcrawlers, but Mother Nature had a different idea. We ended up with a snowstorm that left us with about 4 inches of snow before turning to sleet. We wisely changed our plans. I didn't leave home at all, doing all my sketches from home...which unfortunately gave me ample time to snack too. lol

I started with a sketch of my warm, comfy bed after I woke up. I did the sketch before I even had coffee.
By that time I needed coffee, so I made a pot and sliced some mushrooms for an omelett.
I wanted to sketch some views of the snowstorm. I put a chair just outside my front door under the overhang on my patio and sketched looking toward the next unit in the complex. You can see my snow covered patio chair and the Christmas wreaths and trim that I still have up.
By now my fingers were freezing, so I did the next sketch from indoors. This is my living room looking out toward the patio that I sketched before. I got to sketch my brand new drapes.
This sketch was done standing inside my garage with the door up, looking across at the other building. Even sketching that way was mighty cold.
I had a half page left and no more scenic views from my apartment, so I sketched my backpack and trusty art supplies.

Christina

This was done at the South Bay Art Association's Portrait Group this week. I think this one came out looking pretty much like Christina.

Treasures

The Patchogue Sketch Club met at Queen City Cupcakes yesterday for a indoor sketching opportunity. The owner, Carol, has wonderful and unusual items for sale in the store so I focused on a few of them instead of the sweets.

Rupert

Now that my plein air group isn't meeting because of the cold I decided to join in with the SBAA portrait group that meets on Tuesday mornings like I did last winter. I am a bit rusty. Rupert came out looking like he was about 40 years younger than he actally is. He told me he is 84.

Hidden Oak Cafe

Sunday was brutally cold here on Long Island but my friend, Susan, and I wanted to paint. We headed over to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Oakdale and sat in the cafe to paint. We expected it to be somewhat empty, but anyone that came to the park came into the cafe to warm up.

Tic Toc Cafe

Yesterday I stopped to paint the Tic Toc Cafe in St. James. I've eaten there before and thought it would make a good subject.

Glowing Colors

Here is another of the paintings I did forVirgil Carter's class on WetCanvas. I like the intensity of the colors. It is a bit different from my usual paintings.

Patchogue Bowl

Last evening the Patchogue Sketch Club met at the Patchogue Bowl for a night of sketching. We are really lucky that so many local places allow us to come in and sketch. The bowling alley is fun, but a bit noisy.

NYC in Living Color

Back in December I was taking an online workshop with Virgil Carter at WetCanvas on using loose, colorful colors. This is one of the paintings I did that I didn't get to post at the time. This is 8 x 10.

Old Field Lighthouse

Yesterday's drive took us over to the Old Field Lighthouse in Old Field on the north shore. I should have started at the top so that I had room for the tip of the dome. lol This is 7 x 7 in my Stillman and Birn journal.

Short Beach

Our temperature hit 61 degrees yesterday, so my friend, Susan and I headed over to Short Beach on the north shore near St James. I like painting the marshes. This is 8 x 10.

Caroline Church

I painted this the other day in Setauket. I used my Stillman and Birn 7 x 7 journal for this. I really like the square format. I'll have to try a few bigger paintings that are square. This is a little local church, but I think it is the small cemetery that makes it look so quaint.

Damariscotta and Christmas Cove, Maine

I've showed the trip up and back to Maine on the ferry, so I guess I should show the paintings I did up there. It was very cold so the only painting I could do was from the car.

This first one I did sitting in a parking area on the other side of the river from my sister's town of Damariscotta. These are a few of the buildings down by the water.

We decided to have lobsters (which I didn't sketch this time) and few lobster places were open just after Christmas. We called some and finally found one down at Christmas Cove in South Bristol. Usually there is no place to park when you get down there since it is so tiny, but at this time of year I was able to find a spot to sit and paint facing the water.I will have to go back there again. It is a nice spot. Both of these were done in my Stillman & Birn sketchbook. I like the 7 x 7 format of this size. It makes for some interesting compositions. Their books are worth checking out. www.stillmanandbirn.com

Return on the Ferry

I still have a few paintings from my trip to Maine to post. This was done on the Cross Sound Ferry coming back from New London to Orient Point. There is always something on the ferry to sketch.

Southampton Waterview

I decided I had to start the year off right, so on New Year's Day I took a ride out to Southampton. I did a little sketch of a store in town, but wanted to do something larger too. I drove down by the beach, where in season you can't park unless you are a resident or want to spend $30 to park for the day. On Sunday there were lots of free spots. This was the view I picked and painted from my car. The painting is 8 x 10. In reality it is not quiet as yellow as it is showing on the screen.

This is the sketch I did in my journal in town.
